I'm not sure if I'd call that "layman's terms", so just to check I've understood it...

If I'm capable of riding for 70-80 minutes (the duration each way of my commute) with an average heart rate of 140 or so (78% of my theoretical MHR of 179), then I can press on and do so in the happy knowledge that I'll get more out of it than I would throttling back to 120 or less, and I should've only considered throttling back if riding at 140 meant I was wimping out and jumping on the train after 20 minutes?
Laymans terms.... Ride as fast as you can! In fact, traffic lights are good as you can push it then get your breath back! Sort of hiit training! Hope u have showers at work!

Interesting stuff here. My 220-age should be 185 and I regularly get up to that at the end of a hard set at training (swimming).
Last time I measured my resting heartrate it was about 45. I drink a little more than I should, but have never smoked and am a good weight for my height (6'2'' and 13 stone).

Reason I'm posting is that I'm off for an ECG and tests tomorrow as I've been having quite a number of ectopic heartbeats recently, had about ten alone on Saturday and four or five more episodes today compared to around one or two episodes every six months dating back to my early 20s. Felt like it was going to go bang at one stage!

I wouldn't worry about it.

as long as its not freakish in either direction then it really makes little difference whether its high/low slow resting etc etc. Everyone is different.

I ride with a couple of guys that have 206 Max's, means nothing.

It does mean something, though nothing for OP to worry about.

Hi all,

A little late getting to the party, but all good reading so far.
I am also doing exercise every morning for about 45 mins.
OK I read as a rough guide, 220 minus my age (56) should give me a max HB of 164 per minute
I will buy one of there HB monitor / recorder things to start keeping a record.
I was up around 107kg, and now after good eating etc, am hovering around 94kg.
Just can't seem to move any more.
I would like to target my weight at 90kg, but it's not easy.

My question, at what HB do I start to really burn energy and therefore fat, if that's the right term?

Do I need to hit 165 BPM to know I am doing some thing worth while?
I don't, in fact, have never smoked.
I probably have about 12 pints of larger a YEAR !, so almost zilch

As I am "between jobs" at the moment, my time is "my own"
What I have noticed, of a mornings, is, if I do a run / jog / fast walk around this park, right nearby our apartment, I can normally do 4 circuits, at 11 minutes per circuit, but if I have just sexed her, that morning, then energy is down, and I can only do 3 circuits.
I am not trying to make it smutty, or any thing, but that's my finding.

Maybe so, but it's the pints of smaller that are the real killers! wink
