They do reduce the 'atmosphere' but that is the price you pay for saving your ears. I only wear them in very small venues as in stadiums and large places like the O2 the sound is not as loud as a venue with 600 people and a system turned to the loudest.
According to the guy who did my earplugs if you have the fuzzy noise after a gig then that in itself is a sign that damage is being done.
