I have Coronavirus

I’ve had a pretty rough cold for a few days. Well, man flu actually. Not the real flu, man flu, which is worse...!
I had to speak to the docs about something else yesterday so mentioned I was feeling rough, that I’m sure it wasn’t anything more than a cold but asked how do I tell and what’s the best thing to do? I got a very simple one line answer - “have you been abroad”. I replied no, to which I was told “well you can’t have it then”!
I don’t want it, of course, but i was amazed at the short shrift I got over even mentioning the C word!
I’ve had the same and I have been abroad (although not Italy). Doc was pragmatic and said we can test you but there’s no cure anyway and statistically it’s unlikely. It was the accompanying breathing complications from my fever I called about, so obviously was told to call back if things get worse. No no no, man flu is a term used to describe how men fail to cope with flu like symptoms. To say you have man flu is the same as saying: "I have some very mild symptoms, but am too weak and pathetic to cope and complain to everyone around me about how terrible my plight is."
I sure that isn't what you meant.

It's a serious point, but I think peoples' behaviour is changing. For instance, in the pub last night the OH observed someone sitting behind me casually extract a large bogey from his nasal passage with his index finger.
Ordinarily, chances are he would have wiped it on the side of the bar stool or the underside of the table. He appeared however to make a conscious decision to eat it, thus mitigating against the spread of the corona virus.
Small steps.

It takes 24 hours for the results to come back (I've been tested), not sure how you stayed at the hospital for "most of the afternoon"?
My guess is he was unwell so they admitted him, tests found he had Coronavirus and then was discharged to self care at home.Edited by Thales on Saturday 7th March 08:08

And that’s how it spreads... quite shocked that were not testing and isolating 100% of people who exhibit symptoms, whether they have been abroad or not. You’ll never stop the spread otherwise

Nope, I was tested recently. You are not even allowed in the hospital, you phone 111 and agree a time and they test you from your car. OP is a Walt.Thales is right, same procedure for my work colleague. Drove to hospital car park, swabbed nose and mouth and then sent home to wait for results.
3 days later he got the all clear.
I'm not sure things have moved on quick enough to test and give results in one afternoon. To give the OP benefit of doubt I'll stick around on this thread and see if he comes back and updates us.

The flu kills 300,000 to 600,000 every year. Why is this particular virus hitting the headlines so hard
Because the mortality rate of coronavirus is significantly higher, and it's spreading very rapidly, faster than swineflu did, for example. If enough are infected then it could very, very easily kill more than flu.TyrannosauRoss Lex said:

It's really not. You're just spreading propaganda.RossiT said:
Yes it’s official, after spending most of the afternoon at the local hospital, I have the virus
...
my GP who advised going to the hospital for further tests.
I don't understand this bit. Are you in an at-risk group, OP? Why did your GP send you to hospital, against all the NHS and government advice? ...
