How did you fall off the rails after 3 1/2 years? Was it the old "I've cracked it now, I won't get addicted again" trap?
The usual.

Women and drink biggrin

I was chatting to a girl in a bar in San Diego who kept nipping outside for a cig, so I joined her. Then pinched one. Then the next day I swiped a couple more from someone else.

I kept kidding myself that if I didn't buy a packet, I was "ok". Then remembered how annoying it can be when people continually ponce tabs off you.

So bought a packet.

But I didn't buy a lighter! So I was still "ok".

Then I did buy a lighter.

Then I landed in Peru and bought 200 "because they were so cheap, it would be silly to miss the opportunity."

Blah blah blah.

Classic stuff really, and I'm quite aware just how much of a pillock I am for it biggrin

One of the things that kept me off them in the first place was my S2000 - that was my incentive and my reward. I couldn't afford to run it if I was spunking over 200 quid a month on cigarettes. So now I'm looking at Caterhams biggrin

Similar thing with cigars here after 18 months off.

One cigar > two cigars > pack of cigars > Cafe Creme > Cheaper to buy fags banghead

Least I know now that I can't ever have another biggrin

This time that really doesn't appeal. The only time I think about it is when I'm pissed, other than that, no chance.

Its stupid isnt it?
Last time I stopped I allowed myself a cigar when drinking on the basis that I didnt really like cigars but they would fill the void.
Then I started arranging to go drinking so I could smoke.
THen in one session I smoked nearly 20 hamlets so next time I simply thought- cigars are pointless and smoked 30 cigarettes etc etc etc

Keep it up.

I stopped on 9th March so I'm just over 2 weeks. I'm doing it without patches or gum etc but I do have a fairly powerful motivation in that I sufferred a heart attack on 9th. Thankfully not a big one and a quick balloon and stent at St. Thomas' and I'm well on the mend. Will end up better than before.

Certainly won't be going back to the fags.
My dad had a heart attack on the 27/02/09, same procedure as you, and hasn't smoked since, he had been smoking 20 a day for 45 years, i gave up on the same day as him after 15 years of smoking, however the cravings don't seem to be going away.

Hope you're recovering well.
Feeling great and not struggling too much with the lack of nicotine.

Good luck to your dad and to both of you in staying off the weed.

Missus asked if I wanted to go out for a beer. I declined frown

Not sure I'm quite ready for that huge test - I could probably handle one at home but not in a bar with others smoking.

Edit: as a small test - I'm going to have a G&T

Best of luck. After 10 years of heavy smoking I gave up in December '07 and haven't looked back since.

Good luck. I too am trying to cut down/give up. Have not had one at all today, and have averaged about 5 a day for the last 3 weeks, which is a significant reduction from 20 a day.

Tis difficult, but it's all in the mind IMHO. Keep oneself occupied - thats the trick for me

Yup - Off to bed. Been a late night with a few drinks at home - had the usual urges but was able to deal with it.

The missus says she's very proud of me - that's motivating enough on it's own.

Night all.

I cheated by being more or less comatose for two weeks. By the time I managed to clamber out of my hospital bed to see if I could still remember how to walk, I'd done the cold turkey thing. That was almost a year ago and I still haven't had a smoke. biggrin
I now use the money saved to buy more petrol hehe

As daft as this sounds, the key is simply not to buy any. If you have an urge then, by the time you've grabbed your keys and wallet and headed out the door, it's usually gone.

That's why I failed miserably today, I retrieved the ones I'd lobbed away.

I have none now and am determined to stop properly in the morning.

I'm down to 2 a day.

And damm it, those 2 are highly enjoyable.

Down from 20 a day, so doing ok so far. Another month and I'll wean myself off them.

TBH if you could handle 2-a-day and not let that go back to a 20-a-day why stop?

I know if I could pick and choose when I smoked, a few after dinner every now and again, I'd not bother stopping

Damm it. Don't say that.

One after work, then one after dinner. I want the one after work, and it feels damm good, sit by the water and watch the sun go down, but I quite often don't bother with the second one.

Not any desire to go back to 20 a day, nor any cravings. I just enjoy that evening smoke I guess.
