Posted this on my normal forum....

A few years back (Oct 2008) I crashed my motorbike and broke my spine in 2 places (+ a shoulder blade). I started lifting seriously in Oct 2009. Over the past two weeks i've had a pain/niggle in my spine, between my shoulder blades where the break was (T5 & T6). It's not stopping training but it's there's a definite strain there that's not been apparent thus far. The Yoke, farmers and stiff leg deads show it up. Felt it [it]alot[/it] today.....

Plan is to continue as normal, doesn't seem a problem but my head is worrying me......

Thoughts???

Listen to your body, seriously mate that twinge could lead to a long lasting injury just around the corner, take your foot off the gas for a few weeks if need be and slow it down.

Better to go light or lay off a few weeks than to carry on and sustain an injury that will put you out for 6 months plus.

You may well be correct, got a comp in two weeks so I'm tempted to do 1 heavy session then have a week off before the comp. I'm confident the pain can't be related to the crash but it's in the back of my mind.... Odd that's i've never been bothered with it before- I know my spine set in a slight curve....maybe never forced it to this degree before?

Kinda made my mind up but still..... (will report back soon........................)

As a kid, around 9 or 10, I remember my back seizing up in that area a few times in cold weather. Bad enough that I couldn't really move/ do anything and told friends to go off and play without me as I tried to recover before limping home. It was so bad that I remember being nervous of it as the next winter came round and sure enough I got problems a few times for a couple of years.

Turns out it was caused by a born curvature of the spine (the consultant looking at my neck after a car crash when I was 35 said I had Alexander's Syndrome and that nowadays most children would be spotted and treated but in 'my' day it was often ignored) and that the pain was rubbing of material in the spine around the 5th and 6th veterbra and/or pressure from unnatural weight pressures on the spine/ sheer forces not being where they should be. This could also cause micro fissures in the disks and so pain caused by the gel touching on the nerves, like in a lower disc 'slipping'. Unfortunately he said the advice for sufferers he saw, especially in adolescence would be no weight lifting!

I wonder if your accident causing some curvature could have a similar effect and that there is some unnatural force (exacerbated by the weights your moving) causing strain to the muscles around that area or even rubbing etc as above?

I still get twinges there sometimes but found that doing face pulls with cables (supposed to be good for regular trainers in restoring postural balance etc.) or bent laterals + stretching helps ease it.

Prompted by the lower back injury I picked up on Monday, which has been trouble on and off all week, did a change today and glad I did - got an excellent boxing only workout which I've neglected for a few months now as I've been (too) focused on weights/ re gaining strength.

Did:

c. 5 or 6 mins (non-stop) of right jab, straight left then left jab/straight right (I'm basically a southpaw but not vastly different side to side and can fight from both stances, leading with either hand)

10 mins of combination punching working on 3s and 4s and putting some welly in now warmed through and back holding up

5 mins speed/endurance work concentrating on body shots

then some technique/ explosive work practising the jab/hook combination (same hand then repeated for the other side) getting the movement down over a few warm up shots then doing 'sets' of 3 where I worked on getting the jab back as fast as possible and the hook off with no pull back so it landed hard and fast before the bag had time to swing back from the jab - look and sound almost instantaneous when done right.

Then 25 hyperextensions, leg raises, side bends and planks to finish.

Really pleased that I had more speed and snap than I expected after the neglect + it seemed to loosen by back off nicely (always feels better when I'm doing lots of boxing) and will now get back into this more, so I've changed my gym arrangement around now and am going to change tack as I felt a lot better (fitter and more mobile) until I stopped training like this last autumn.

Few sets of heavy farmers today, back felt OK but is stiff now.

Very light/easy week now with lots of food and sleep as I'm starting to feel completely battered.

didelydoo - just to "+1" what others have said. No harm in taking it easy and having a rest week, give it a chance to recover etc. Spines are a complicated, fragile structure. Fragile is the wrong word. I mean when they get injured, that can be that, for ever. For example, once a disc has slipped one has to be careful to ensure it doesn't get worse or happen again. I'm not saying this is the case (i.e. crash) or this will be the case (i.e. new injury that you might collect if you carry on) but if it doesn't get any better IMO it's always worth speaking to someone in the know.

My trainign today...

Bike intervals. 1 minute on at 24mph, 30 seconds off. Did 20 mins like this. Then I did about 20 mins of core work. Enjoyed it.

Just had my best outdoors run in a while. From runkeeper GPS 5.48 miles, 43mins 22secs, average 7 mins 55 secs per mile and a 473 ft climb. Most of it was on quite a soft/muddy cycle path. The dog enjoyed it too.

44.35 was my previous best for the same route.

Broke his nose all over my shirt, so hoping that the DNA will come back on record, the police have already taken my clothes and covered my back for self defense, just hope the CCTV of me chasing them down the street doesn't come back to haunt me!!

Stabbed in the back of the head!! st! What kind of damage has that done? Broken hands are an arse, due to using them all the time they can be a fker to heel. I feel for you bud! Did they get away with anything or did the explosion of his nose do the job before they got the chance to take anything?

Keep us updated on what comes of this! Hope they get caught and arse rapped in prison. Seems unlikely though, with people seemingly getting away with murder these days.

They got my Iphone, pickpocketted but I noticed straight away so they went for the whole hog, luckily was in a well lit area with plenty of cctv so hopeful!

Luckily the knife has only scraped the skull, still... 3 broken knuckles 2 metatarsal 2 dislocated fingers and a broken cheek bone.

Feeling a bit daft, could've been killed over an insured phone. Found out by accident in hospital that these two are regulars around my flat and are most likely the ones that did my flat mate, if the police don't deal with it... I'm going to.

That is st! And you're probably right about the insured phone and fighting back business, but I know if I was in the situation logic wouldn't kick in.

If the police don't sort it, set up some Home Alone Escque (sp?) traps that will fk them up. Make sure you record them and post them on here thumbup

Getting mugged, thats pretty scensoredt I think that i would be tempted to try and find them and dole out a little rough justice myself.... Suspect that the old bill would only slap their wrists and theres not much satisfaction in that. Saying that if you get caught you'll probably end up in much deeper water than the perpetrators!

Back on topic did a cold 40miles on the road bike, out onto the edge of Dartmoor. Nothing too serious as off to play on the trails at Cwmcarn on the mtb tomorrow.

Scensoredt, sorry to hear your news Downunder, hope you recover from your injuries quick. Couldn't believe what I was reading at first. Keep us posted on developments mate. What goes around, comes around...

Just got back from the gym, upper body workout. Felt pretty good.

Just read your readout Furious - some decent elevation there as well as calorie count. Gonna go out tomorrow and do a lumpy ride myself, won't be able to match that though!
