Evening all,

As per the title has anyone completed in one of these tough mudder type events?

http://toughmudder.co.uk/

I'm really keen to do the southern event in June this year but I have a small problem in that I have a pretty badly damaged knee and have a slight concern (my wife has a big concern) that I may end up in hospital having a spot of premature surgery if it all goes badly.

A bit of back ground on me and my buggered knee...I'm 38 and in good shape, i have good nutritional knowledge and as such eat very clean (1 cheat window a week...sometimes 2)and I train hard with a combination of weights and various types of circuits (MMA/bodyweight/boxing etc) 4 to 6 times a week every week of the year without fail, i'm 6'2, 15 stone and at the moment about 12% BF (this will lower over the next few months) however, in September 2011 I went in to have routine key hole surgery on damaged cartlidge which but during the operation it was discovered that I had pretty bad arthritis, this was mostly cleaned and removed, but more worryingly it was discovered that I have a hole in the back of my knee cap and it was pretty badly cracked, this was tidied up and following a period of physio I was sent on my way.

As a result of this injury I have been advised to stop all quad exercises and running, the specialist said that it was not a question of if I would need a knee replacement but when, depending on how I looked after my knee, he explained that the next step would be removing my knee cap and popping a synthetic bung in the hole and smoothing it all over but eventually I would have to have a full replacement....this was something of a shock and as an active chap rather depressing.

Anyway, as sad as it is I love to challenge myself physically and tough mudder is something I really want to do but if you have clicked on the link you will have seen what it entails and it isn't going to do my knee any favours, my thinking is that I would avoid all running as part of my training to save my knee for the event itself and use the likes of cross trainers etc for my stamina and continue with the type of training I currently do....so really my question is, has anyone else found themselves with a similar dilemma? what call did you make? are you glad of did you end up regretting it? I would really appreciate people opinions as I am torn, I am 22 months away from 40 and with a bad knee I'm pretty short on time to do things like this and I don't want to regret not doing it, on the other hand I don't want to be a total idiot and do myself serious damage...the other factor is that my good lady wife (who is all honestly doesn't get my passion for exercise although is very supportive) spent 12 months from the middle of 2011 and early 2012 very ill and she is understandably overly worried and kind of thinks I'm a mental.

Any and all opinions/thoughts invited.

I think you've got a good handle on both your condition and the requirements of the event. A simple risk analysis will help you determine whether you value your longer term health over a specific event in June. Good luck!

As said above overall its your decision, I would suggest any physio/sports therapist would say no but once something is in your mind you want to crack it, I understand that I had a period between 2008/10 where I was entering 30 mile races and Ten Tours I had severe knee and ankle pain but took these http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/aches-and-pains/medicin...

Which if i'm honest masked the pain but created a worse injury in the long run, also is Tough Mudder worht creating a worse injury? Its pretty much like Tough Guy and you never really get into your full stride and some obstacles are bottle necks, If you currently conduct MMA training and Boxing training as well as weights why not give a X-Fit Comp a go? Short bursts of running or short runs at an incline would be better in the long run.

Failing that a 6/12/24 hour row for charity or a 10k open water swim, channel relay swim, sprint triathlon? How about cycling does that affect your knee, there are some cheeky events?

Whatever you do good luck mate.

I did it 3 months after damaging my ACL in right knee. My training involved low impact cardio and swimming mostly. Prior to the injury it was mostly running.

Depends how bad it really is for you though.

There are some good tips in there, i'm going to investigate some of those other events you mentioned as I really want a goal to aim for this year rather than training for training's sake. Thanks.

It's doesn't really hurt, i can feel it and i am aware of it but I'm not experiencing any pain...I'm going to have a crack at some light jogging tomorrow and see how i feel after that.

Epicly good fun. Definitely a challenge, but so much fun. If I do it again, I'm aiming for under two hours.

The run and the training you do for it will considerably shorten the time before another operation is necessary.

It's not worth it.
