My missus, a top gastro nurse, says get down the doctors asap. Could be nothing more than piles etc but could be more serious. Get it checked asap.

Yes, bright red. Went to the doctors about it, he checked, reckoned not serious but referred me anyway. Went along Dr had a look with what can only be described as a small telescope. Said no problem just a fissure easily sorted with more fibre in my diet.

So get over the embarrassment go and see the Dr, it's not that bad, they do this everyday and you'll get peace of mind.

Seriously doubt this is a problem.

I had this a few years ago, my wife, rather comfortingly said "it's probably bowel cancer" (a real sister of mercy my mrs) so I went trembling to my doctor expecting to hear that I wouldn't live.

Turned out it was essentially a form of piles, but inside. (Sorry, a yuk subject). Anyhoo, no treatment needed and it went away never to return.

There were a couple of things that were important to the diagnosis, did the blood appear before or after the poo?! After is good, before is bad. Is the blood separate or mixed in? Separate is good, mixed is not so good...

Anyhoo, point is, it's probably not serious. HOWEVER... as above, get yourself checked out quickly. You need to know for sure.

I hope my rather intimately revealing post is of help! I know I was very worried indeed (cos it's a shock seeing blood) and was massively relieved to find out it wasn't serious.

Apparently, as mentioned above, bright red's often not too much to worry about - it's almost certainly something awry with the nipsy area. A fissure, overly aggressive wiping, or even a pile. Darker red, or black is a potential sign of internal problems and should be investigated professionally.

I'd imagine that large quantities of bright red blood would be a concern, too. More than a pale tinge in the water or an amount similar to a shaving cut on the paper.

Scared me when I thought I had a similar issue the other day, until I remembered I'd had beetroot soup the night before biggrin

Go to the doctor unless you've been eating large quantities of beetroot every day for the last year!

This is right, probably you have nothing to worry about, but still get down to the doc's & make sure!

bright red - piles. Conclusion - drink more water.
Dark red - internal bleeding. Conclusion - see my thread on the Aftelife

hehe

Well, indeed...
bright red ie fresh blood => haemorrhoids or anal fissure; check your diet (ie more water, more fresh fruit and vegetables)
dark red ie old blood => blood coming from further up the digestive system so could be sign of cancer or some other digestive problem.

In any case, you're best off to get to your GP and learn to relax. I'd have a wash beforehand as they will want to insert a digit. Also try to find a GP with small fingers. thumbup

My toddler once has a dark red blood stained poo in his nappy one evening and basically we pooped ourselves. He had been in nursery all day so we desperately tried to get hold of them to see if there was anything we needed to know about his day etc. Thankgod for facebook as we managed to contact one of the nursery teachers who told me he had eaten red paint. Obviously he had eated alot more than they saw too!
Thankfully it saved us a trip to A&E that night.

OP: Have you eaten any paint?
