When people talk about doing tricep dips, are they talking about being in an upright position and using a dip bar, or with feet extended out in front on the floor and arms behind them on a bench and lower themselves down until arse is near to the floor?

Also, if the former, how to do you set up differently to target triceps instead of chest, or vice versa

I don't differenciate tbh (they are so similar) but most people call close grip dips tricep dips, and wider grip dips chest dips - both using a standard bid bar (the one where you are holding onto the handles and are suspended in the air).

The difference between the two is negligable usually (as close and wide is the difference of a few inches) and I alsways do narrow grip as I find it more comfortable.

I've found that using a wider grip for parallel bar dips stretches and works my chest a little more and a narrow grip shifts emphasis to triceps.

if your doing heel to floor tricep dips, for a little added core stability try crossing your legs and balancing on one heel instead of both.

How do you go narrower on a parallel bar?

All the gyms I use the bars are either adjustable (i.e. they can swing in or out) or the aren't parrallel, so the further back you go, the wider the grip you use.

Lean forward = lower chest/shoulders/triceps

Upright as possible = Triceps/shoulders to a lesser extent.
