I think performance is very relative, also while extra performance is always nice, it's not the be all and end all, as long as the car does not feel slow relative to the segment in general, in which case it would get marked down, being a bit behind a individual rival does not spell disaster, and a half second here or there is not that big a deal either

Back in the 90s the Lotus Esprit SE with chargecooler was one of most accelerative cars you could buy, it was quite a bit quicker in a straight line than most other performance cars of it's price and several more expensive ones aswell, i read a review around the time, were it was compared to the NSX, 911, etc and did not do all that well, it was one of the fastest cars there 0 - 60 and 0 - 100, but if my memory serves it came in near the bottom, the 911 was definately ahead (think it came first, surprise surprise) and so too was the NSX, there was also a 348 and in there, and a couple of others i now don't remember.

while i remember the reviewer praised it's performance it fell down in other area's, which meant other (relatively) slower cars were rated better, simply because while they did not offer the same pace of the esprit, there performance was sufficient for them not to feel slow, and they were not really any less desirable, because they took longer to get to 60 or 100, in fact the reviewer rated them better!

It's the same with the Evora, it might not be as fast as a Cayman S but to most people the differance is neglible and both cars are what most would consider to be fairly fast, most people will not likely want for any performance, the Evora does not have to set a new straightline benchmark it simply needs to be in the right ballpark performance wise which it currently is, and most reviews i seen rate the overall package as very good, and the overall package is what's most important i think, performance can easily be improved and Lotus will no doubt release a faster version in the not to distant future

I suppose driving a GTR or M3 is like listening to the Sex Pistols; you'll want to turn it up to full volume to enjoy it; whereas driving a Lotus is like listening to Bach, it doesn't need full volume or even benefit from it.
nicely put sir

ok so the evora is slow is it:
here are the official stats for 0-60:

porsche 911 C2: 4.9 secs
porsche 911 C2S: 4.7 secs
Evora: 4.9 secs
Cayman S: 5.2 secs

like for like with comparable spec the evora is circa £10-12k cheaper than a 911 which also has pointless child seats at the back.
Fair enought the Cayman S is cheaper but it if you have a child you cant fit it in a 2 seater.; oh, and its also slower.

I am guessing when the Evora S comes out it will blow the 911S away also

I have driven a 911 and Cayman then bought the Evora.
Please drive it before you critise it.
Handling and the 'feel' is light years ahead of a 911, acceleration is pretty similar, top speed lower but 165 v 180 - who cares?

Every day that i drive it, i see at least half a dozen porches, but very rarely a lotus of any kind....that kind of exclusivity is well worth it....

My Elise will do 0-60 in 4.8 seconds; that just shows its traction, it's way slower than any of the cars you've listed above, despite having a quicker 0-60. There's no doubt that the Evora is the slowest of those four cars; the power to weight ratios and power and torque firgures show things up more clearly:

porsche 911 C2__ 245bhp/tonne 341bhp 288lbft
porsche 911 C2S_ 271bhp/tonne 380bhp 310lbft
Lotus Evora_ 203bhp/tonne 276bhp 258lbft
Cayman S____ 219bhp/tonne 291bhp 251lbft

I've not yet driven the Evora, but I have a strong suspicion that it's the one I would pick out of those. I expect it would be a similar decision to that which drew me towards my Caterham Roadsport VVC instead of a super quick Westfield, or my Elise instead of a Boxster S. As you put it very well yourself:

It's steering feel, ride and handling that matter to me; and from the press reports that I've read that's what the Evora majors on. Whether it's a slow car or a quick car in absolute terms is totally subjective, and it's pointless arguing that, but there's no hiding from the fact that there are plenty of quicker accelerating £50k cars out there.

I'd be surprised if it's faster than a Cayman S or 911, in the case of the Cayman S it has more power and similar weight, but the differance if any is likely to be neglible

Most reviews i have seen rate the overall package very good, and given the choice i'd take the lotus aswell, being a lotus fan will obviously have some influence on it;)
