Citing in football for diving
Discussion
After watching Didier Drogba last night, I cannot help but think that blatant diving has to be punished.
My idea is from rugby, basically if someone is suspected of diving, although the immediate outcome remains unchanged, after the game officials can inspect extensive video evidence (taking as long as they like) to decide whether or not a player has taken a dive and conned the referee.
If found guilty, the player concerned should be banned for [b]one match per dive[b] and handed a fine of say 10% of their weekly wage (again, per dive) which could be contributed directly to grass roots football, clubs may then take further action i.e. fining the player further for match conduct etc.
I am not victimising Drogba as many players from most clubs have "conned" referees in recent years, however, even talking to a mate of mine who is a Chelsea fan he said he was "embarrassed by Drogba" last night and I feel exactly the same when I see a player from my club do it.
With so much money riding on such games, surely there must be a way of stopping players conning match officials, with the threat of bans/fines surely this would encourage players to think "i havent been touched, its not worth pretending I have and risking a fine and more significantly a ban". I just think any player guilty of this gives a terrible example to follow for the youngsters.
It doesn't have to be guilty or not, if there was an element of doubt i.e. slight contact whilst running at pace, the officials could simply rule the decision as inconclusive.

I think the current way of doing things i.e. only investigating things which the ref has already seen has to change.
Retrospective punishment for diving and other infringements has to be done but where do you draw the line? I appreciate that a slight glance may look like no contact but when you are running full pelt then it can and will knock you off balance.

100% agree, OP.
The whole Chelsea team are a disgrace, they ruin the game of football with the way they constantly dive all the time.. And that Drogba, should be banned for a few games. Rugby has it right, fines/bans handed out after the match sure makes the players think about what they're doing (Mostly!).

I agree it is certainly time for post match reviews/punishments for blatent dives/fouls that the referee didn't pick up on.
Drogba in particular really wound me up and last night I was getting particularly fed up of Andy Townsend's commentary to where he contradicts himself repeatedly. One minute Drogba is falling over holding his face when the Napoli defender was no where near making contact with him and Townsend comments that Drogba is "being clever in winning the free kick"
Later in the game Drogba gets tackled fairly and then proceeds to shove the Napoli player to the floor and the ref gives no free kick, Drogba is said to have "used his physical strength" according to Townsend.
Moments later a guy with a 3-5stone weight disadvantage leans on Drogba who proceeds to falls over straight away winning another free kick.
Yet it was the Napoli players who were branded time wasters and using injuries as a tactic to slow the game up.
To be honest until the repeat offenders start getting booked more often for diving nothing changes.
My own view (within the penalty area) is if you go down due to contact its a penalty, if you go down and there was no contact or not sufficient contact to require rolling around play acting its a yellow card - simples.

Why just the penalty area? and as for the poster above - fair enough a glance knocks you of balance but you don't need to roll around on the floor. Yellow card for obvious over reaction too. Retrospective bans for diving with no contact. I'm sick of Andy fking Townsend and every other nobhead commentator implying that its only foreigners who dive and if it's a home grown player he only does it because 'it's part of the game these days'. bks, they all do it.
As for well there was contact so it's a definite penalty, WTF is that??Since when was football non contact, and when the attacker deliberately leaves his leg there so the defender makes contact with it. Yellow card for that too. fk it, wkers.

It seriously has ruined the game of football, it's not enjoyable to watch.
They're paid ridiculous amounts of money, and are supposed to be top atheletes.. Yet they can't take a gentle nudge? fk off.
I play for a local team (well two in fact) and the tackling is agricultural compared to the Premier League. Yet I can count on on my fingers the number of times I have actually fell to the ground this season, never have I seen anyone roll around. The most I have seen is someone take an extra roll or two but they still get straight back up. It's a frigging joke and until fans start deriding their own players and FIFA/The FA start punishing these pussies it will continue. They're paid ridiculous amounts of money, and are supposed to be top atheletes.. Yet they can't take a gentle nudge? fk off.
For me, it is always telling that a truly injured player hardly moves. Usually due to being in a lot of pain.
In this day and age, with the amount of coverage and footage available post-match, it should be matter-of-course to review events like Drogbas last night (and as a Newcastle fan, Tiote against Sunderland) and apply a suitable punishment.
A spate of 3 match bans with no appeals heard should sharpen things up.

I believe they would just get better at acting.
Last night when Drogba was on the floor he looked up to see what was happening. If a rule or disciplinary procedure did come in they would just stay on the floor and not give anything away making people aware of their cheating.
It wouldn't be immediate, replay the match afterwards to look for the dives and then hand out the fines/bans. Last night when Drogba was on the floor he looked up to see what was happening. Busquets on the floor looking through his hands to see if the player has got a card then all of a sudden, oh I'm ok.

Imagine Chelskis team, there would only be about 3 players left
A lot of singling out of Chelsea on this thread. I agree, diving shouldn't be rewarded, but I think now its part and parcel of the game. EVERY team has divers in there first 11. I think its a case of what goes around comes around... Its now pretty much too big a part of the game to change imo...
It's actually started creeping into Rugby too, anyone see Keith Earles go down when he was touched by Max Evans last weekend?....laughable.
But there remains an embarrassment about going down in rugby, whereas in football, the mouth breathers (players/fans/pundits included) just accept it as part of the game. How Drogba can show his face in public again after that beggars belief. His take on it would be ' aint just me...init.
Citing should be initiated for diving. Simple.

When the Premier league chairman does it what hope is there of stamping it out !
