The Official Liverpool FC Thread [Vol 20]
Discussion
It’s got nothing to do with the title fight, or LFC, but this is the only football thread I look at or, very, occasionally post in. So I would just like to say that we picked up 4 Olympic football game tickets in Bordeaux for 24Euros each last night
Pool game, probably Japan or South K v Paraguay, but I don’t care, I’m going to the Olympics to watch football and that’s Uber cool to me!
Quarter final tickets for the week later are also available at a whole 50Euros. Unfortunately I have to be at a PH’ers wedding that weekend

What a season. Regardless of finishing position, it has been brilliant. To come from 5th to challenge for the title is outstanding.
Before the season started I was desperate for a back up RB to be signed and then I saw Bradley.
I felt we were light at CB and Quansah emerges.
Klopp has somehow turned Gomez into the new Milner.
He's also bought 3 midfielders for about £100M and meshed them into an excellent starting trio, developing Elliot and Jones further, so that they are decent replacements.
All credit to Klopp.
And Ljinders, Krawietz and Matoz. And the rest of his team. He would say the same. But yeah, hell of a season given the predictions from most on here and the media generally (the latter of course being mostly clueless and writing us off as also rans based on last season). So many new and existing players have come on a hell of a lot in a short time. Before the season started I was desperate for a back up RB to be signed and then I saw Bradley.

After watching us against Chelsea in August, I really feared the worst. Shows how much I know.
IIRC, we played well first half and should have put the game to bed. Chelsea were much better second half, a draw was a fair result. As with most early season games, some players are rusty, some more fit than others and Klopp trying players in less accustomed positions. Chelsea were desperate to start the season well after last year's disaster and were in new manager bounce mode. Yes defensively we looked vulnerable but we had an experimental midfield where Mac played at six and Gakpo to the left of him! Thankfully that has been ironed out over the course of the season. Usually 10 games in is a better indicator how the season will likely pan out (injuries permitting). 1pt separated us, City and Arsenal back then.

At that point of the season, it was thought that Chelsea would be title challengers, those thoughts have proved very wrong...
Yep, 2 points dropped in hindsight rather than a point saved. Adam. said:

We were lucky to take a point from that game… Chelsea battered us for long periods.
Yep as I recall we were on top for first 20 and then were bloody awfulWe were generally poor for the 1st few games but we managed to get results… we’ve improved massively as the season has progressed… IMO, a lot of that was down to Endo getting up to speed allowing MacAllister to play in his natural position… and becoming one of our beat players.

Haven't found our shooting boots but still top of the table.

Really comes down to sheer volume of our chance creation. We may screw up up more than we put away but probability of one or two eventually going in also increases as a result.

Given the completely new midfield and so many injuries, it seems a minor miracle we are where we are. Almost everyone in football apart from "those fans" thinks our losing to Spurs was all VAR-mistake driven, which would have left us with 1 loss all season so far. The new midfield gelled incredibly quickly, once Endo was up to speed (and by all accounts, they were really working to get him up to speed quickly - I would love to have seen what that entailed). We were generally poor for the 1st few games but we managed to get results… we’ve improved massively as the season has progressed… IMO, a lot of that was down to Endo getting up to speed allowing MacAllister to play in his natural position… and becoming one of our beat players.
Regardless of where we end up, Klopp must have thought they would be doing well to get back in CL places, when he knew a major overhaul was needed. Credit to the kids coming through so well and covering when required.
