Now we have a United fan defending a player where there’s pretty much irrefutable evidence of sexual violence against a young woman.
Clearly you know something the Crown Prosecution Service doesn’t. You really ought to pass your dossier of irrefutable evidence over to them.
Pretty much everyone knows he did it but she wouldn't provide evidence, there only doubter appears to be you. Greenwood is scum and should be out of the club.

This is an interesting and has been an articulate debate about a very difficult subject. Don’t change that.

I’m utterly torn. Simon isn’t alone.

If his partner has forgiven him and they are having a child together and they are now happy is he not entitled to at least give an explanation?

It’s a moral minefield but football is not exactly an exemplar of decency. That’s not an excuse for Greenwood at all but I’d rather see contrition from him, rehabilitation and education then maybe forgiveness setting an example for others as opposed to banishment.

Far far worse has gone unpunished in less media swamped times. The daughter/sister argument I get completely and I’m not excusing greenwood in the slightest. I’m just prepared to listen to him. If he’s contrite. That’s a big if given the horrendous nature of the audio.

It's not unusual for victims of domestic abuse to repeatedly go back to their abuser. It's rarely because the abuser has suddenly found a different moral compass.

I think another issue is that he can't make a statement about what he's done and how his rehabilitation can be a lesson to others because he's then admitting what he's done whilst having charges dropped against him. The two oppose each other with no way out.

I don't envy the decision makers at the club on this one.

Pop star Chris Brown beat up Rhianna a few years ago. I didn't follow the story but he continued his career. He did apologise for it all at least https://www.cbsnews.com/news/chris-brown-apologize...

He's a serial abuser who then sold out a UK tour recently. People will overlook such abhorrent behaviour in the name of entertainment.

Just to add my two pence worth.

As a busy criminal lawyer of 20 years experience where Domestic Violence is unfortunately the main bulk or our professions work... There is no way on this earth that the CPS dropped that trial because she would not provide evidence. They have a zero tolerance policy on it and very rarely drop anything and the fact she was reluctant to give evidence or the fact they were still together is the norm. The CPS run the trials regardless using the 999 calls, the statement of the witness if after summonsing her to court she confirms it was true, by playing the body cam /video evidence etc etc

For me even though he comes across as a complete arse wipe in the audio theres got to be something new/evidence related that cast serious doubt as to whether he did it or not.

He is just the kind of player we need but cannot see him ever pulling our shirt on again

ps its also quite scary as to how many scenarios such as Greenwoods case involve some quite blatant and serious lying from the victim. Trouble with my job is you become very cynical and dont take everything at face value

If she claims he kicked her with his right foot she's a wrong un.

Sorry, bad taste. It reads odd though, filed with Sao Paulo police, so Brazil Jurisdiction, that he assaulted her while he was in Manchester? Unless the facts are wrong how's that going to work?

biggrin bad taste yes, but very good nonetheless.

Reminds me of the Maguire incident in Greece where people were claiming he couldn’t have landed a kick on the copper because he’s not quick enough on the turn.

Whatever you say, don’t forget to condemn him immediately and damn him for all eternity else you’ll have the interloping paragons of virtue coming in their droves to try to make out you’re a mass-murderer or similar yourself.

I agree that it reads odd. More facts need to come out to see what the reality is, as that makes no sense at all with the countries, timelines and I’m assuming jurisdiction. If I commit a crime in Brazil, I’m unlikely to be tried for it here.

Why would he remain suspended by the club, if the suggestion (as per your comment) is that she lied to the authorities? I’d have thought that his solicitors would be demanding a statement from her to allow him to resume his career. Given that they are apparently back together as a couple that would be in her best interests and that of their unborn child too, as well as Greenwood’s.

I'm not sure its cynical, realistic perhaps. People jump to conclusions all the time without understanding much, if anything, of any situation.

Kicks the can down the road for the new owners? Doesn’t impact the squad during the season? Doesn’t impact value of the club for new investors?

But nothing to do with the owners. Greenwood gets a clear, unequivocal public statement from her outlining everything and he forces the club’s hand and ensures his career has more of a future than it does now. The owners then have to decide what to do, Greenwood goes into a situation with potential to win compared to where he is now.

I don’t understand why our learned friend with all the experience would hint at something, but then back off when faced with a simple layman’s challenge like mine

Romano reporting we're in for Kim Min-jae. If we can somehow get 30 million for Maguire and him for 45m then it would be great business. We would have 4 top class centre backs to rotate with then.
