Without knowing the full details of the bet, it makes it more difficult to explain. But i'll try...
So he'd bet £100 on an 8 timer at 45/1, and 7 we're in...
Going into the final game, depending on who he'd bet on and where they were playing, (ie Inter would be higher odds to win away than they would at home) you put a stake on the remaining 2 outcomes to guarantee you get a profit.
If Inter were at home, realistically they were probably priced at around evens, but he's already got that result covered. The draw i'd estimate would be around 9/4 and the Udinese win around 2/1. So by putting £500 on the draw and £500 on the Udinese win, he would guarantee himself at least £400 profit...
When I do big accas, I try to include a game that kicks off later or the following day so I can do the above. But if I do, I try to include a team at shorter odds, say 1/2. so that the draw will usually be around 3/1 and the other team around 5/1, so it is a lot easier to cover for a smaller stake...
Alternatively, you if on Betfair, you can lay the last leg of your acca in order to cover the bet. This means that you become the bookie and in the above Inter Milan example, you offer to pay out the evens odd if Inter won. So in this instance, if the punter had 'laid' Inter at evens for £1000, he still would have made at least £900 profit...

I think I get that and it sort of makes sense to me.So he'd bet £100 on an 8 timer at 45/1, and 7 we're in...

I appreciate the odds you’ve suggested are hypothetical but unless my maths is wrong the win would still leave you £100 down overall. Nevertheless, I think the idea works in theory. My personal concern would be a danger of crossing the thin line between occasional, modest stake gambling to larger stakes.

Why didn't you cover the bet?
I took a stupid gamble. Should have covered it around 30-40% in hindsight but I was stupid ![hehe](/inc/images/hehe.gif)
edit: The odds on that 8 way were ridiculous by the way. I used to go for 3/4 really unlikely results every week because that is the only way to make a £10 bet go a long way. The only way I could have hedged it out at the time is likely to have been with a credit card. That win would have come in handy big time

If your pushed for time and want to do a quick acca what works for me is
6 selections from prem and next 2 leagues
Highest team at home
Lowest team away
Not great odds but you make money
You could garnish the 6 with an interesting 7th ?
Try it but note Scotland is to be avoided as anything can happen up there

Alloa
Man Utd
6 fold - Pays 41/1
Man City
Cheltenham
Chelsea
Sheff Wed
Barnsley
Brighton
and another 6 fold- pays 61/1
Sheff Utd
Fulham

The bookies must love me.
eta: Swindon - despite being a man up or losing 2-0. Talk about a bad start.

The 4 fold is still on though - just need a United win today!
Cheers, I liked the look of your four fold choice but added Man City to make it a five fold of 45/1. So £5 on Swansea, Middlesbrough, Alloa, Man Utd and Man City has returned £225! ![woohoo](/inc/images/woohoo.gif)
My other £5 worth of bets didn't work, but I did have Fulham for the win and a Sunderland Newcastle draw. If only I'd put them on my five fold to make a very nice seven fold. Still can't grumble about a £220 weekend profit.

Does anybody know if there is a way to find out the average amount of time in the PL until the first goal is scored?
Might be here but cannot confirm:http://soccerstat.net/
