I am wondering if this will prompt some kind of government intervention? Boris put out a statement last night condeming the move - Neville mentioned football in this country needs regulation. Has the genie left the bottle or can government implement regulation and implement for example compulsory fan voting for any future proposed changes. Make clubs go through a formal review process to prevent such things happening in future?
I very much doubt a Tory government will implement a "socialist" ownership framework. But maybe they'll move towards what Gary Nev is proposing with a regulatory body to oversee football in England/UK instead of/alongside The FA and the Premier League.

Though, I'm not sure the government can stop a business/clubs from choosing to set up their own competition and governing body if they choose.

I am sure there would be a way, through councils/ police to make it a condition that English stadium / clubs have to be a member of the EPL / other registered English leagues.

Of course that doesn’t stop a Liverpool franchise moving to Poland but can’t see that happening ever.

What he thinks of the idea and what he says in public will be two different things ultimately. I don’t think the managers will openly bite the hand that feeds.

Apart from Jose rofl who stood up gallantly for all is little people / got himself fired with the maximum payout before Spurs mathematically failed to get a CL spot and without Kane get tonked by City in the league cup.

Klopp might decide to comment on a slightly unsupportive way, or may stay neutral. And if he finds it very distasteful he will get his agent to make enquiries behind the scenes.
Ultimately Klopp's thoughts on the SL are already in the public domain. Of course, he may choose to bite his tongue for now.

Probably against anti-competition laws to state that they HAVE to be part of a particular organisation.

I wouldn't put it past FSG to move LFC to Boston...

I know we mock (sometimes fairly) each others fans but seeing your fans already printed up protest banners, statements saying flags will be removed from the Kop

Well done, hopefully our supporters trusts will follow suit

I believe pretty much every supporters organisation has already come out and condemned the plans. In fact I think Man Utds was one of the first.

Some more updates.

UEFA have confirmed that any player at an ESL club will not be allowed to participate in any UEFA competition, including the World Cup and Euros.

The 12 founding clubs have signed a 23 year commitment to the ESL. <-- This is definitely happening.

Apparently they've had preliminary talks with broadcasters and they can bring in 4bn a year - twice that of the CL.

Ahhh must have missed it, stupid work getting in the way of news smile

Its astonishing how they have misread this, years of "banter" and arguments on here and yet barring one or 2 everyone is almost unanimous, same IRL with my mates too

What’s the significance of 23 years? Why not a nice round 20 or 25?

Not sure tbh. If they expect things to begin next year then it takes them up to 2045.

What the source for this?

I'd be shocked if the founding clubs were already legally and financially committed to this (ie; there would be financial penalties if they pulled out).

They'll never make that stick... there will be immediate legal challenges both by players and by the countries FA's. Plus the World Cup is a FIFA competition.

Just threats and posturing.

This will end up in court either way - the respective leagues and UEFA first or the 12 clubs first - either way, that was always on the cards.

With FIFA involved in the Super League, how can anyone threaten stopping players play in the World Cup?

There's a big chunk of me enjoying this.

Hugely greedy organisations all going nuclear. Someone's going to lose. My gut feeling is it's going to be the PL/UEFA but we'll see.

No way will those players not be playing at the WC, I'd bet my mortgage on it so FIFA are full of st too.

Those threats are bullst... even is the ESL happens (and it won't), there's no way they will be legally able to stop Salah playing for Egypt, for example.

The messaging is purely designed to destabilise the players of the 12 and try and create some pressure from inside the clubs.

I'm with you. It's really quite amusing to see the hypocritical organising bodies start proclaiming how altruistic they are, and how they are there for the good of society, when they themselves and significant leaders of their organisations have been taking money out of the games through bribes and dodgy payments.

Also, at the moment, all that has happened is the teams have said 'yeah we'll carry on as normal with the domestic leagues and cups, we just don't want anything to do with the Champions League and Europa League'.

For most fans this won't mean anything less than it is now and may even be better. Maybe.

However, the governing bodies have been absolutely had their power removed and the clubs have unionised and are currently breeding their own cash cow whilst UEFA's is in the corner dying a slow death.

I think when you look beyond all the rhetoric and moralising the clubs involved have simply said 'fk you' to the Champions League and UEFA.

This actually gives West Ham, Everton, Palace etc a greater chance to play in Europe each season.

Also there are spaces for teams to rotate into it so there is opportunity for teams to join and yes, the no relegation thing goes against everything we know, however my sympathy for the organisations that have for years creamed this sport is zero

Of course they can. They are the governing body and it is their competition. Of course they cannot stop Salah playing for Egypt in friendlies, etc. But I'm willing to bet they can exclude him from certain competitions in the same way that those players can be excluded from club competitions.

And if half the teams that have qualified say they're not going to play if their best players aren't allowed to play?

Won't happen.
