Completely agree. If Southgate wants a good holding midfielder, JWP's your man. To take White as cover for Maguire tells you that Maguire isn't fit in the first place.
Surely the right thing to do is to remove Henderson and Maguire from the squad ("sorry lads, we can't include unfit players") and replace them with JWP and White?

Maybe he's taking them for experience if we get through the group... But if the others blitz the group, why do that.
Southgate should go all out attacking football. Pickford (who he will inevitably shove in goal) is a liability even if you had 50 fit defence minded players in front of him. So just go out and score plenty.

Ben White is used to playing in back 3. Is better than Mings (who isn't!) too.
But I suspect a main reason is that he can also play holding centre midfield (which he did the other day before TAA got injured).
Personally, I think Southgate should have got rid of Mings too and put in someone like JWP.
The main issue England have is poor preparation. The last game or two before the competition, we should be pretty much playing with final 11 (I understand Ctiy/Chelsea players couldn't play but still..) in the formation preferred (back 3, but the last game playing back 4), we've had last few years to "practice" which formation he wants. The last game should be fine tuning, not experimenting..
Also, selecting a few injured/unfit players isn't wise either. I'd understand one if it was a Messi/Ronaldo quality player that worth gambling on, but not someone like Maguire (we may be knocked out before he is ready, and if we do get through you wouldn't want to change the defensive setup that late, so why bother!) Also, there are others of decent quality (Tarkowrski, Dunk, Webster etc.) all of which are not injured and fit.
I'm intrigued as to why the Chelsea and City players couldn't play? But I suspect a main reason is that he can also play holding centre midfield (which he did the other day before TAA got injured).

They're capable of playing 2, if not 3 games a week.
They should have joined straight up with the squad if they want to be an England player, if not take yourself out of contention.

I heard on the radio that we are joint favourites with France.
I’ve only just stopped laughing & I heard that on Saturday.
We're categorically behind France, Belgium, Germany and Portugal and if the Netherlands hadn't been hit with injuries we'd be behind them too. I’ve only just stopped laughing & I heard that on Saturday.
I don't even think we're demonstrably better than Croatia, luckily their best players are aging now.

I think quarter finals is about the best we can hope for....and I'm not sure we'll get that far tbh.
Of course an element of luck might come our way, but an early exit might mean Southgate exits early as well, so silver lining and all that etc.

He then jokes about the dropped players having a chance to make him look silly (and let's get it right, whe he said that, he was on about Lingard, Watkins and JWP). One of them, JWP, makes him look silly by having a good hour in the final friendly so Southgate selects one of the others instead.
It's a farce.

Agreed. The best players we have are attackers: Kane, Foden, Mount, Grealish (in form), Rashford and Sterling (currently out of form, but can be excellent).Maybe he's taking them for experience if we get through the group... But if the others blitz the group, why do that.

The liability players are in central defence: in particular Mings, Pickford, Walker (if centre back) and Stones. I'm ignoring Maguire as he may very well not play.
I could be wrong, we'll see, but it looks as if Southgate is planning a defensive strategy. Way to go, Gareth, play to our strengths eh?
There is no doubt that Jack Grealish is a class player. He is a player very much of the modern age in that he plays for every foul.
I personally do not like this style of play, the penalty given was not a penalty as Grealish created the contact and fell over.
When are the authorities going to get to grips with this and start sending players off for simulation? It's becoming a joke now.

The issue is in these situations there is contact and therefore a penalty is awarded. Its not always clear cut if the player has initiated the contact and therefore it would be difficult to sending players off for simulation. Clear dives with no contact need to be outlawed. I don't agree with players initiating contact, but often its not obvious and it creates a grey area for referee's.
As a Saints fan I cannot quite believe that JWP has been over-looked. I know that he plays for my team but if you want a penalty taker and someone to come on a be a defensive midfielder, he's been very good for 2 years now. His dead ball delivery is probably one of the top 3 in the premier league. I'm biased but seeing many others speak up for him is heartening
I do wonder why they have not renamed them to 2021 Euro's

Merchandising re. the naming (and agree re JWP, ridiculous decision not to take him). I do wonder why they have not renamed them to 2021 Euro's

While I agree he was kicked all over the park by Romania and wasn't protected by the ref at all. I personally do not like this style of play, the penalty given was not a penalty as Grealish created the contact and fell over.

How many times do we see a player fall over with minimal contact? Dangerous tackles are a thing of the past.
