I understand that we have had a makeshift defence for most of the season, but what has cost us so many late goals recently has been the defenders all out of position attacking. The opposition hit us on the break when everyone is scrambling back to cover. Why ETH keeps encouraging them to do this game after game is crazy.

True, but the permanent sick note that is Malacia & Martinez are. I get that no manager would realistically be able to cope with an ever changing defence and that the injury list has been huge this year. However, that doesn’t excuse the lack of playing style, or the non-existent midfield, or the failure to address the lack of service to Hojlund, or persisting with underperforming players.
I agree with the comment further up though that there’s not exactly a lot of choice when it comes to managers out there and that we won’t be high up the pecking order when competing with Liverpool, Bayern & Barca. It’ll be interesting to see how Liverpool get on with their potential new Dutch maestro.
There is a playing style ,as mentioned it’s deliberately chaotic .I agree with the comment further up though that there’s not exactly a lot of choice when it comes to managers out there and that we won’t be high up the pecking order when competing with Liverpool, Bayern & Barca. Agree there are not many managers around who you think could come in a turn the club around quickly .
We had a first XI outplaying when Liverpool beat us 7-0, we similarly played our best XI vs Wolves at home on the opening day of the season when they had 23 shots at OT, same when Spurs beat us 2-0, same when Newport County had 17 shots and came from 2-0 down etc etc etc.
So if it’s all down to injuries, what happened in those games?
Injuries would excuse not being able to beat a full strength Man City for example.
They don’t excuse getting 1 win in 3 x 90 minute attempts against what are ostensibly championship level opposition.
Martinez seems to be heralded as the missing piece to the jigsaw, yet in his 11 games this season we lost or drew 7, scammed a win vs Wolves (23 shots), beat West Ham (22 shots), beat Forest (10 men ) and beat Wolves away (95th minute winner).
I’m not seeing much there to suggest his return suddenly turns us into prime Barcelona…

Whilst ‘strong ‘ teams none were our ‘first 11 ‘ in any of those games you mentioned I think .So if it’s all down to injuries, what happened in those games?

Obviously injuries are not the only issue but I think they have been so crippling you can’t ignore them either .
I think it’s evident Martinez makes a massive difference and judging games where he has just returned from injury after a long time out is not very informative .
No we aren’t going to be world beaters had the likes of Martinez and shaw been fit but I’m pretty certain we would be in a far better position than we currently are .

I think a main issue for us this year is out lack of continuity. As Frankie mentioned constantly changing back 4 all season. When a few players come back from injury, another 3 get injured straight away so the team is constantly changing, players have to fill in and play in roles they wouldn’t normally play.
No wonder at times we look stop start during games.

No one has suggested we’ll be prime Barcelona have they ffs. The team is a hell of a lot better with him in it (fully fit) wouldn’t you agree? Same goes for Shaw

We started playing badly after the league cup final, there was a different excuse then, which wasn’t injuries.
Is our record with Martinez this season any better than without? I don’t think so. So I will have to say disagree on being “a hell of a lot better”.
Whoever the personnel on the pitch up, they’re being set up to fail by an inept manager.

Watching the Arse Spurs game you can certainly see the importance of pace in defence.. Maguire and Casemiro would have been murdered in this game if we played like spurs.
Van De Ven is so rapid, it’s incredible! Absolute beast from a physical perspective. Havertz was clean through at one point and VdV ate up the yards LF5335 said:
City will win the title and next year and the year after and so on until Pep leaves
While I agree that's probably true - it's possible that the cloak of invincibility might stay when he goes - depends who they recruit as manager. Doubtful it'll be the handful of different styles you've had since Ferguson. Some say anyone could manage City (you could maybe) and it's not Pep, he's just got the most money - well you've had money and look how it turned out for you. There's no doubt he could get a tune out of a broken record - he may not win as much of course - I'd love him to go to another club in the Prem just to see how he got on ... (not that he ever would).
