Your post is a little ambiguous so just in case - the first female Premier League ref on 23rd December is Rebecca Welch.
Only ambiguous if you don't follow football because you'd know who Sian Massey is and you'd also know I wasn't referring to her in the 'she' comment
smile
Indeed, it is a little ambiguous as I said. As we see the confusion being caused here for example :

Exactly. she is a good asst ref hope she has a good one. I did notice than there are now womwn on the NFL crews
"She" being Rebecca Welch is not an assistant referee.
Rebecca Welch is refereeing the game on 23rd.
Sian Massey is an assistant referee in the prem.
Sian Massey has never refereed in the prem and is not refereeing the game on the 23rd.

I think it's fairly natural when someone new starts in a position for people affected by it to hope they are up to it and to state as such. I'm not sure we can say that in this case people saying it are only saying it because it's a woman in this case. That feels a bit like just looking for things that maybe aren't there. Especially in this case, since the 'I hope they are better than what we have' is natural when currently what we have isn't seen as particularly great.

The fitness one though, yeah that's a bit odd. That should be taken as granted.

What is specifically different is that more noise is being made about this than if it had be (just another) male ref making a debut, since this is remarkable in a very good way - Rebecca Welch taking charge on Saturday will rightly be seen as a bit of a landmark & deserves to be pointed out.

Yeah he has made that comment, but also flip flopped around women involved in men’s football saying they shouldn’t cover it and it’s stopping men for getting a chance in media.

If you read his Twitter he is coming across as a dick

League 2 team supporter here, last season we had a female referee for one of our games. In my opinion she handled the game well and the players from both teams respected her decisions. My only reservation about this appointment is will the egos of some Premier League prima donna's be hurt if she gives decisions against them.

No problem at all with this.

If Andy Madley and Craig Pawson are deemed adequate enough then I'm sure Rebecca Welch will be an upgrade on those two clowns.
and Anthony Taylor
and Simon Hooper
and Paul Tierney

TBH the bar isn't high at all, it's currently sitting on the ground.

I’m a Hull City supporter - she refereed our game (I think it was v Rotherham) a couple of weeks back - best ref we’ve had for several seasons - let the game flow whilst pulling up genuine transgressions
Interesting that the players were much more respectful of decisions - and she was very prompt and clear in making them

I think 1. The FA insist that male referees choose a pathway, so they choose between Women’s and Men’s - most choose the men’s game. Perversely, they allow women to do both, which is bks but there you go.

Awful lot of positive discrimination in the game nowadays aimed at getting more female (and BAME) referees in the top echelons of the Men’s game even though they may not be the best officials. I’ve watched a lot of non league football and in my view the female officials get far better treatment from the players and benefit massively from that, but some see it as they manage the game better.

Either way, Welch won’t be the last and even though i disagree with the method of getting there I hope it becomes the norm. Male, female, balg, ginger, whatever shouldn’t matter at all.

An overpaid tart of a footballer for a Premier League team, who since a young age has had smoke blown up his backside by all and sundry. He may be gifted but his ability to fall over at the slightest touch is top notch. Can be identified off pitch by getting out of a modified Range Rover (in black) and walks into training wearing an alice band and carrying an Armani or Louis Vitton shower bag. I think that covers it.....

have the fans learned to behave yet?
Fans are well behaved and I'm a bit sick of casual observers continually to make out it's the 1970s again. Or basing their views on some stereotypical view after watching Football Factory and the latest Leeds vs Millwall game.

92 professional football clubs. That is 46 games per week. Hardly any trouble or issues with families and all backgrounds going.

Around 600'000 fans attend games each week in total across all professional leagues.

There's around 40'000 non-professional clubs, some of whom still have fans and supporter bases. Majority will be amateur level though.

Football arrests last season totalled 2200 approximately. This now includes those for drugs. The most common incident recorded was to do with pyrotechnics. Arrests also include throwing things, swearing and running on the field of play.

2200 arrests is low considering the millions who attend games each year.

I have had a season ticket at my local club for 16 years. They were Premier League for 3 years, championship for most of the time and also a period in League One. I've seen one assault in that time - where the boy (16 years old) was arrested.

I've never been a victim of theft/assault/criminal damage or otherwise directly threatened.

My partner has also had a season ticket for around 6 years.

Anyway, this is all a long rant to say that football fans are well behaved given the numbers attending professional games. Incidents are generally minor and anyone looking from the outside usually is basing it on a televised derby game between two big rivals.

I meant their behaviour to officials and staff especially female officials and staff and of course it's not all fans that are the problem.

I would post some of the stuff that used to get chanted at the female doctor at Chelsea but I'd probably get a ban.

If that sort of thing no longer happens it's all good smile

Anyway there isn't a dedicated thread on it but it seems a better question right now is whether Joey Barton will learn to behave after his latest comments.

What an idiot.

Instigated by Mourinho and carried out by supporters of her team - I'd say that abuse directed at female officials and staff is a one off unless there are other examples I've missed.

I'd say female officials will get an easier ride from players and managers and they bring a different aspect to officiating the game which will bamboozle supporters and players - for the short term at least. Welch will be successful.

I was at the Fulham vs Burnley match and Rebecca Welch was reffing. She was excellent and there was no misogyny from the crowd, the players seemed ok as well.
