What I find difficult to accept is the idea that it makes any sense to sit back against bad teams. I think it maybe works OK against good sides (although the statistics don’t really back that up). But why the hell were we camped in our own half against West Brom?!
You still don't get it. This is the Mourinho method. Get a lead then get behind the ball. Doesn't matter if he's playing Barcelona or Accrington.

We are a harsh bunch!

Until they met the hapless bunch from Wembley on Saturday night despite the free lowing football city had had a series of tight results winning by a single goal. We are moving in the right direction. Let's see we're we are with a run of 10 league games with Pogba consistently in the side. And reassess the quality of the football.

If I was being generous I'd say we were trying to game manage, to avoid spending too much energy ahead of a busy few weeks. It's just that we're crap at it. Far too many players not confident in possession meaning eventually the ball is played back to DDG for a hoof, where we lose it.

On top of that add the keystone cop defending that at times we still produce (exhibit A, their goal) and it's a recipe for disaster. Like everyone above I'd rather we just kept attacking - not because I want to see more goals as such (though I do), but just simply because we are useless at the opposite.

That said, we still have the best defensive record in the league I think, so it can't all be bad though a lot of that is down to the deity between the sticks.
the defensive record is so because defending is utter st in the league, and has been for a long while.Name one player in any team of the last say 3 years who would get into the say united 2008 defence,or one of the great chelsea defences ? There are some great keepers around but the art of defending has died out .

They did have a tough run, but they’ve strung together umpteen wins. We started the season with fantastic free scoring and positive football and then we have gradually got more and more negative in our approach (Arsenal match excluded), the performances are in a downward trajectory.

If we are as dependent on Pogba as we appear to be, then we are in serious trouble, as he could easily get frustrated and ask to leave if we can’t give him the opportunity to pick up trophies like he wants. Ronaldo can’t carry on forever and PP could easily be tempted to go there.

Not sure I would exclude the Arsenal match. We sat back in our own box for most of that game, letting those second-raters test our keeper over and over again. A freak result, but the insane negativity was present in that match too.

Utd should have scored 8 against that Arsenal side, rather than making it a close game by letting them attack us at will.

I think we need to show our opponents a little more respect. It’s not time to panic. It wouldn’t surprise me if the pressure of trying to keep up with City and knowing they can’t make a mistake is praying on the managers and players minds and affecting their performance. City have largely had an untroubled season so far afaik. We’ve missed Pogba for a large part of the season. City would miss De Bruyne if he was out of the team.

Respect - yes. Fear - no. We should also play to beat them, not play aimlessly and expect them to cave in.

We’d miss him without a doubt, but, as this season has show, we’re full of quality players at the moment and far from a one man team.
We’d keep on winning smile
For what it’s worth, I personally think United are pretty good and Pogbas return will improve things even further.

I'm far from happy about being so dependant on Pogba but he's one of the few world class players we've had for years and it's a right pain in the arse he's the engine of the team. Hence missing him so much. With him in it and Matic sweeping I'd back us against anyone. But we are a work in progress still.

He's back on WEDNESDAY (I think) let's buckle up and enjoy Christmas!

I’d forgotten all about the EFL Cup! What weaned to do is have a team that is confident to play and win without Pogba and very confident with him. We’re lacking the former sadly.

Nope, you're playing Bristol City. Wednesday got knocked out by Bolton in Round 2.

I was shocked when I watched your game on Sunday and the stat came out that DDG has made the most saves in the prem. Normally this is reserved for the 3-4 worst teams in the league as evidenced by the fact Fabianski was second and he is always up there.

Backs up your comment about some dodgy defending although DDG has pulled off some unexpected saves this season. DDG is head and shoulders above any other keeper for me (I hope Courtois can get up to that level and neither of them bugger off to Real Madrid!).

A big part of this is that we invite long range shots. Statistically, shooting from distance is almost pointless, so it’s a smart tactic against all but the best sides. Not a good idea against a side with great shooters, but they are few and far between.

It’s odd because aside from arsenal it’s hard to think of anyone really testing ddg this season.
Pretty sure you could have played every game aside from arsenal with the argy in goal and it wouldn’t have made a difference.
