I'm a Villa fan. You've signed a man who is extremely effective if utilised and man managed correctly. All the stuff about him being a target donkey is completely untrue; he has great ability with the ball at his feet, he reads the game well and, of course, he is a great physical presence. He's an all-round player who could become the next Drogba - he's just 24 remember. In my opinion, where he struggles is when he hits a bad patch and his head goes down. He needs a manager who can keep his spirits high and push him to play at his best. If you stick him on the bench and expect him to perform on command then you may not see the same Benteke I've seen. This could change as he gets older and more experienced. Good luck to him, just not when you play Villa.
Interesting post that, ta. I've not watched him play much and whenever I did he was struggling. Hopefully he gets handled well then.
I watched him destroy us at Anfield a few seasons ago. Last time I watched him was the FA Cup Final - he was a useless lump up front. Hopefully we know how to bring out the Benteke that played at Anfield 2 seasons ago and not the one that played at Wembley 2 months ago. I've not really followed him in the in between bits.

I am really looking forward to this season and there seems to be a decent feel good factor about things so I am keeping my fingers crossed for a very positive season.

I can't believe none of the bigger CL clubs were interested in him. Shame nobody on here wanted him 2 weeks ago,

Nonsense - I think one poster said they'd prefer Berahino! Most were very happy!

Mario's future is in his own hands - yeah right! if someone makes a decent offer for him, the club will bite their hand off. wink

I think you could remove the word decent from your post and it would still be true!

I wanted Berahino as I thought he'd be available for c20 million and would suit our style better.

Nor am I the only one who was unhappy when it looked like we might be in for him. He's here now so lets hope he performs and we manage to get the best out of him.

In the little I've seen of Benteke he looks good on the counter attack but poor at trying to break down teams who park the bus.

Perhaps someone more informed can confirm or correct my view.

Yes - hence, I said most not all.

For what it's worth I like Berahino too and if we'd signed him instead I would still have been pleased. Every transfer is always a gamble - let's hope this one is more Torres than Carroll!

What did Sherwood do differently to Lambert with Benteke?

Now we have him, I'd be interested to understand how we get the best out of him? How will we do this bit?

“Give him a chance and he will score. His responsibility is to hurt the other team and score goals. The shackles are off. Now we are playing it to Benteke a lot earlier, keeping him in the game is key. It stretches the opposition,” Tim Sherwood.

Good post and thanks for coming in with a constructive view.

I must admit I'm not wholly sold on Benteke as he never seemed constant and it would be nice to have a Striker who can motivate himself the majority of the time.

However, as RT said well, he's here and I absolutely support him being in the team and hope absolutely smashes it.

Poppycock - There was more than one poster that said he didn't suit " our style of play" & therefore he wasn't the player we need.

Personally i think he's an excellent centre forward & i'm sure he'll score 20 + goals a season if Mr Rodgers plays a style to suit him.

I'd go as far to say i think this is Mr Rodgers best signing since being in charge at Liverpool.

I saw on Twitter this morning that Jamie C has written an article. I haven't read it and I'm not going to post it as if someone disagrees with it somehow it'll be my fault. So just letting you know.

In other news I assume everyone has already seen this and is ready for the new season?

I have to say I have been thinking he might not be the best player for our team from what I have seen of him too and said that previously. However I hope I'm wrong (as I normally am!) and will support him as with any other new player.

To be fair, playing for Villa I doubt he's had much exposure to teams parking the bus...

Plus he won't be the man breaking down the teams, with Coutinho/Lallana/Markovic/Ibe/Firmino we have enough to hopefully break them down, Benteke just needs to get on the end of it all!

Shame this isn't a world cup year, cos the way we are going and all these new signings we'd win that too.
