What question is Sterling the answer to?
Run very fast in blind alleys and then fall over?
Indeed.

I know Rashford is not exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment to put it mildly but when was the last time Sterling consistently put the goals in?
Let's not forget it's arguable he also plays in the best club team in the world ahead of the best midfielder in the world.

My 11 would be

Henderson

Walker Maguire Stones Chilwell

Trent Henderson Sancho

Foden Grealish

Kane

We're missing a world class holding midfielder and world class strike partner for Kane but other than that not too shabby.

Maguire, Henderson and Kane provide a good experienced spine of the team with plenty of young creative talent around them. We've even got a few options on the bench.

Henderson is fked isn't he? Not played since February?

Kalvin is a world class holding midfielder, just hasn't had the chance to show it yet as he's been marked by his team mate Rice (who I also rate).

I’m sorry you can’t just stick Trent in midfield, and expect things to go well at an International tournament. Trent plays well at RB not centre midfield.

He's fit again.

Take your point about Philips, untested at this level but you can argue he's earnt his chance.

Defending is literally his weakest attribute, when you watch him every week, think I saw every game he played last season you realise he's average at best. Yet he can pick a 50 yard pass better than most midfielders. He'd also be capable of dropping in If Walker went forward. He averages an assist every 4 games too.

Gerrard started at RB for a couple of years and I'm surprised Trent hasn't followed him into midfield yet.

Agree he has good assist averages, again from right back in a Liverpool side that allow him to bomb forward and they provide cover. The stupid thing is Southgate has picked 4 right backs, and left us light on cover in centre midfield and centre half. Both Henderson and Maguire aren’t fully fit, so rather than have a balanced squad we pick players that might do a job elsewhere.

It would be mental to pick TAA and think oh I know he could play centre midfield for England at the Euros because he can play a 50yard pass or make a few crosses. If he plays for Liverpool in midfield then pick him as a midfielder, but he plays right back. Southgate should have dropped James and stuck in a centre midfielder.

WARNING! this is going to be...

Right.

Goalkeepers: That's why he has picked so many defenders. Pickford is the best of a pretty poor bunch and I would have taken Pope if he was fit but I have no faith in any of them to be honest.

Defenders: Thank fk he picked Trent as he usually plays well for England. Maguire probably isn't fit, Mings is a thug who will get sent off and James has frosted tips. Never trust anyone with frosted tips. & Tripper? Why?

Midfielders: Henderson is not fit or match ready. End of. Mount should start no matter what as he is the form player but Rice is over rated and Bellingham? Really?

Forwards: Grealish and Kane are our strongest players here.

But we also have two of possible biggest liabilities; Calvert-Lewin and Stirling. C-L was a constant disappointment to me during the whole Fantasy Football season and is there just to head in corners and free kicks which I think proves where Gareth thinks the goals are coming from. Stirling will be running around the pitch like a headless chicken that doesn't pass the ball even more than he usually does for England in a desperate attempt to impress Pepe not to sell him. Gareth will pick both of them for every game.

I pretty much agree with GloverMart as he seems to know his onions and I would have taken Watkins and Ward Prowse instead of Calvert Lewin & Phillips but hey ho.

Against Croatia, Gareth will go...

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire
Trent Rice Henderson Shaw
Calvert-Lewin Kane Sterling

I have no idea what I'd do as I am a crap manager even in a fantasy world. But we have to protect our weak keepers and we cannot rely on fancy set pieces to win us games. I think that Gareth will just play the same old faces even if they aren't fit and we will stumble out of our group before meeting an early exit shortly after that.

Still "3 Lions!!" & all that. Yea!

I find it funny that a lot of people are missing Sancho out of their starting 11. Have you not all seen the ridiculously good form he’s been in? He’d be my first choice on the right.

No matter how much class talent we’ve got, Southgate is the manager and that’s our limiting factor cos he’s ste.

Very much looking forward to this tournament. You can play about with predictions here, I get hopelessly optimistic at this stage but any opponent in the last 16 will be tough for England. I think they will draw 2 and win 1 in the group stage, Croatia will win all three, Scotland will lose all three and the Croatia/Czech result will be crucial. So Croatia finish on 9, England on 5, Czech on 4, Scotland on 0...

As a non-Englander I’m going to watch this from a distance, but stuff like this is brilliant. England are going to win 1 and draw 2 of their group matches, whereas Croatia in the same group are going win all 3 matches. How does that work?

I’m not a big fan of the added strain that international competitions like this put on club’s players, but they’re not going anywhere. I enjoy watching the hopes of English fans gradually diminish before it all ends in a big drunken riot in city centres around the country hehe

Oh and my money’s on Belgium, so that’s their chances over at the group stage.

Interesting that between us we've picked all the RBs in our starting 11.

I think Philips gives more to the team.

I'm looking at it now and despite huge gaps in the team, not least in goal (our biggest weakness) and central defense I'm more optimistic than I was a few weeks ago.

That first game will no doubt set me right though.

Think as Gareth I would suspect this will be his starting line up.
