The Official England Thread-The Team We All Support [Vol 3]
Discussion
The same as my last comment really.
We've got a cracking squad at the moment.
Saka into double figures for England at 21, no reason to think he won't be another 50+ goal man.
Trent in midfield doing a decent impression of Pirlo at the moment.
Just hope the likes of Sterling don't get brought back into the squad and that Southgate doesn't revert to type when it matters.

God I'd forgotten about Sterling. Surely he must be way down the list now? We've got a cracking squad at the moment.

Is there a reason why some players cant/dontwant to/dont know the words.....to The national Anthem???
They are footballers and not singers? It's always been the case that many don't sing the national anthem. Why is it with football people expect them to sing, but you don't see singing in other sports like athletics?
Does it really matter if they don't sing?

They really need to ditch these qualification games. They're totally uncompetitive games and a waste of time.
It always makes me sad as well, because we end up getting a bit optimistic, however when we get to the actual main competition, we always come crashing down to earth though sadly. False hope I reckon.

Bellingham, TAA, Rice, Foden is a damn good midfield base that will be together for a long while.
Up front is good. LB and RB are good.
It's CB and GK where we lack truly world class talent.
II still don't understand why Tomori from AC Milan doesn't get a call up. 25 years old, 46 games played this season including 10 in the UCL, 15 clean sheets, and .7 goals a game conceded. Had a tough time against Inter in the UCL SF but other than that has been excellent all season.Up front is good. LB and RB are good.

I enjoyed last night a lot.
I think qualification games like this do add value - even if they're just an enhanced training session. They help the team get to know one another's movement patterns (loving the Saka and AAA) link-up. They also boost the feelgood factor in the team.
It was lovely to see the shots of the families kids in the crowd at Old Trafford. I would imagine they'll be buzzing talking to their friends this morning.
I'm hoping that our experience in the latter stages of tournaments, coupled with the ECL experience of many of the team will make us more battle-hardened when we reach tournament proper.

I think the players around him / sweeping keeper / poor opposition hide a lot of his deficiencies.
A perfect example of a player lacking in both confidence and match sharpness, yet still gets picked for England. A Southgate special, and as above how is Tomori not a far better choice?SWoll said:

Anyway, whilst there has to be a caveat that the opposition didn't look good - and imploded once a couple of goals down - you can (football cliche incoming!) only beat the team in front of you. Quite apart from some of the superb forward play (especially enjoyed the TA>Saka goal) a fair chunk of the performance was down to Englands pressing, they just couldn't get out. The goal where Kane nicked it off the CB was a case in point.

So as usual, wallop the poor teams in the qualification stages helping the players get some ridiculous goal tallies in the process. Then fall apart the minute the other team is vaguely competitive. OK, just watched the highlights and opposition aside, that was the best looking, most comprehensive England dispaly I have seen for a very long time. Saka, TAA, Rashford were excellent adn the rest were very good. The shape of the team really worked, TAA is a midfield genius, his passing beyond reproach. I don't get the criticism of Pickford.
If England could bottle what happened yesterday and use it against better teams, we would be a real threat.

Problem is there simply aren't enough games against decent opposition (at least not until it really matters) and I don't know how you 'fix' that at international level, especially given the time demands of club football.
Every game is tough in the Prem, no other top tier league like it in terms of standard of opposition. I guess the Nation's League in theory tries to fix this, but I don't see any easy way of removing the heavily one sided fixtures from WC and Euro Qualifiers.

As an LFC fan I do of course have inherent bias, but I honestly believe that Trent moving into midfield could be utterly transformational for both the club and England.
Lots of talk about Bellingham, but I'd not put money on him getting a Ballon D'or nomination before Trent at this point. I honestly think Trent has the potential to be that good and has been held back for quite some time at RB.
