News that Qatar is building the infrastructure for the next world cup on the back of labour costing less than £1/hr.

The amount of corruption tolerated or enabled by the custodians of football boggles the mind, how is this allowed?
Money talks, ultimately. Makes me sick. It will be a few hundred more years before we have a more enlightened society. Assuming we all last that long.

What is anyone going to do about it? Even the FBI investigation into FIFA corruption seems to have gone deadly silent now.
Never going to happen but if some of the bigger European teams said they were going to boycott the tournament something would be done.

Paying the workers is another story along with their living conditions (not just Qatar...)

The mix of corruption and soft-corruption is endemic in the sport, Blatter stuff has gone quiet, Platini and UEFA clearly bent, the FA complicit. It's all about the money and short-term gain for those involved, so expanding the franchise is far more important than workers rights, human rights or modern slavery. Ditto drugs, when was the last time a good player failed a drugs test for PEDs? Anyone believe when there's so much competition for the money that there aren't players juiced to the eyeballs?

I'd be surprised if a majority of the people watching and funneling their money into the sport care though, perhaps that's the root of the issue.

I didn't think England should have gone to Russia, let alone any of the st-shows coming up. If England didn't go, none of the other European countries would join them, and it would be a footnote rather than the start of any change.

Indeed. One day perhaps more of them will. Not in our lifetimes though.

The one thing that unites the footballing world outside of England is their dislike of the English.

If we didn't go, they'd all shrug their shoulders and carry on whilst pretending we don't exist.

There's a reason the country who created the game, has the best facilities and fan base and the most worldwide interest in its domestic game, has not been granted the finals for over 50 years.

Qatar? WTF.

They're not even workers, many of them are slaves. They go over with the promise of work and then have their passports taken so they can't leave or quit their jobs.

If that's true, that's fking shocking. I'd boycott the next world cup were that found out to be the case, although I suspect Scotland will take that decision out of my hands anyway.

Animosity towards England may be part of it but the other is commercial. The English league is in the bag, why would they need to hold a World Cup here to promote football? It's already one of if not the biggest leagues in the world.

This is about opening up new markets to generate more revenue so the Middle East and no doubt China at some point.

Yup. It's not just for building the World Cup, it's common throughout the rich Middle Eastern countries and has been going on for ages. Yet another great reason to gift a prestigious competition like the World Cup to Qatar!

The Middle East has sod all population or its population the money to afford stuff (assuming they're not sanctioned against by the US in any case). There's little commercial justification in going to the Middle East, unless you're talking about the type that comes in brown envelopes and gets delivered to FIFA officials.

As pointed out, if true commercials were the rage, it'd be in China or somewhere where there's a decent population of people open to discovering football (you don't see FIFA desperately trying to nudge India into a World Cup, despite their massive population. Probably because the football people in India don't give enough of a toss to pay millions in backhanders for this particular sports event.

The whole thing is corrupt, which is why the World Cup is going to a country with no population or infrastructure and a climate utterly incompatible with playing outdoor sports, but happens to be wealthy....

Extra fan revenue, brown envelopes, it's all about money at the end of the day. There is already enough money in the English PL is the point really so it makes sense for them to branch out elsewhere.

Also India already has a major sport worth billions that we exported to them.

FIFA doesn't really have much to do with the revenues of the English PL?

tbh Jammy, the prices have rocketed up, if they are actively trying to msg people to try find out where the ticket is then cancelling it we might see them all coming off sites and being sold around Marid for much lower prices.

Did you get flight etc sorted?
