Well, the last time Man City were in the 2nd tier their average home attendance was in the low 30k's against a Maine Road capacity at the time of around 36k; obviously different times but in the mid-1980's they averaged 27k for home games against a capacity of 48k (figures which, coincidentally, were not too dissimilar to what Spurs achieved when they were last in the old 2nd division!).
In contrast, last time Newcastle were in the Championship their average home attendance was over 51k and very close to capacity at St James' Park. Even last season - when City won three trophies - they averaged only 3k more for each home game than Newcastle; in fairness both grounds were pretty much sold out every week but would City have averaged over 50k if they'd endured a season like Newcastle? Doubt it somehow....

Newcastle are mid table in the prem just spent a fortune and yet you can buy a season ticket today if you want it. Try buying a Tottenham one and you'll be on the waiting list for years.
This is bonkers im out
Pmsl Tottenham are possible title contenders and Newcastle almost certain relegation fodder and at their lowest ebb since before KK took over in the early 90s, thousands of fans are boycotting the matches ffs. I'm sure Newcastle would have no trouble filling wembley if they were a top 6 team. This is bonkers im out
Not really comparing like with like are we. They'd probably close half your ground if you had the same prospects we did!

I dont think anyone has suggested they are a pull to anyone else though? We are well established PL whipping boys! I understand that nobody outside of Newcastle really gives a fk about them (although I would argue, people are a lot more interested than they make out - people certainly like putting us down), you would have to be deluded to think otherwise, but surely there can be no doubt we are a well supported club; we had plans for a 70,000 seater stadium in the 90s (it got knocked back by the council) and as said before, we’re attracting 50K crowds even when playing utterly crap football!
Besides, I’m not really sure being a fan of a football club where most of the supporters aren’t even from there is really anything to be massively proud of, or an achievement. Would anyone give a st about Chelsea if they weren’t buying titles every year? I seem to remember they were very poorly supported in the 90s when we were actually playing well and they weren’t even remotely comparable!

Newcastle and Everton away are two of most season ticket holders away games to go and watch, it's usually a good laugh.Besides, I’m not really sure being a fan of a football club where most of the supporters aren’t even from there is really anything to be massively proud of, or an achievement. If you mean Newcastle away is a highly rated / sought after fixture, its probably due to the geography of the place by and large. The ground is in the city centre, the walk from the station to the ground is a fairly interesting walk by most cities standards, and its a good night out, and most of the home fans are well natured and don’t tend to look for bother. Oh and the visiting team normally leaves with 3 points I think the other poster meant that when other teams host Newcastle, they’re not the most popular fixtures. I couldn’t comment on that, but nor could I care either

I'm sure Newcastle fans will correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't a part of their ground (the Leazes end) demolished in the late 1970's and, due to financial constraints, not reinstated for over 10 years? If so that will have obviously reduced the capacity at St James' Park during that period. However, leaving that aside, bring it more up to date and look at City's attendances at the Etihad compared to those of Newcastle at St James' Park; I think you'll find City only started getting more when the money (and consequent success) arrived with their current owners, prior to that they were consistently several thousand below what Newcastle were getting! In saying that I'm not having a dig at Man City or indeed Spurs; I accept both are big clubs in their own right, I just think Newcastle's level of true support is similar. If they had an owner who would invest and make the team successful IMO you'd soon see their global support increase in exactly the way the likes of City's and Chelsea's has.
Anyway, I've hijacked enough of this thread in my support for The Toon so I'll now vacate and steel myself to follow my own team through what will no doubt be another depressing campaign in the Championship! #MOT

Correct about the ground size. It was only something like 29000 capacity until they started redeveloping it in the early 90s. Also when Newcastle were doing well I was on holiday in Florida and believe me the locals knew exactly who Newcastle United were. They were extremely popular there by all accounts. Now? Probably not so much, wonder why that is....
