The omission of a few comfort blankets and inclusion of a fair bit of inexperienced talent makes me wonder if Southgate regards this as his last hurrah and is prepared to take some chances.

I'd like to see a team comprising

Pickford
Walker Stones Maguire Shaw
Mainoo Rice
Bellingham Foden
Saka Kane
I don't get this Mainoo chat.

He's played about 10 games and has seemed OK but he's playing in a team where it's hard not to shine if you're half decent.

I wouldn't start Mainoo over Trent or Cole Palmer personally, especially in the group stages. I'd also start Brathwaite ahead of Maguire.

Is it just me or has he only picked one recognized left back in Shaw, and he's still an injury worry?

25 games this season for Utd, technically very good and will be a very good player for Utd and England. Still loads to learn, shouldn't start for England but definatly worth taking just for his ability on the ball.

So 7 to be omitted from that list, suggest these will be unlucky:

Trafford, Bowen, Toney, Jones, Wharton, Dunk, plus one whoever gets injured between now & then. Grealish if not.
I will be surprised if Shaw doesn't get injured - he is barely fit now

Surely it would be 4-2-3-1
Pickford

Walker Stones Maguire Shaw/Gomez

Rice Bellingham

Saka Foden Gordon

Kane

Apparently missed 200+ games for Man Utd through injury.

It won't be though because he wants 2 holding midfielders.

He's a wild card. Did really well in his national appearances. Brings way more energy, mobility and tenacity than Alexander Arnold and if we're playing Foden and Bellingham we need someone who can track back and tackle. That's not Palmer.

Shaw is the only left back in the squad and he's missed most of the season. Southgate has just said he's along shot too. He's had all this time to prep for the tournament and there isn't another left back who's available?

Bit difficult with the squad he has picked for anyone to come into that team. Do you drop any of the front 4 and play Foden out of his preferred position and bump Bellingham further forward

Give Mainoo and Rice a defensive brief behind Bellingham and Foden.

Problem solved.

I don't think he is good enough to start just yet

Seasons over so now silly season has started.

Mainoo should be a starter for England at a major championship. rofl

If he was a striker he'd have no chance. But it just so happens there's a hole we need to fill. He's Nobby Stiles with flair.

We not looking to field the eleven best players, we want to put out the best team.

This. One for the future certainly, but a lot to throw him into the starting I at this point.

We shouldn't need 2 holding midfielders in the group stages ad as pointed out should be playing to our attacking strengths. Alexander-Arnold has a passing ability that will complement the likes of Saka, Foden and Bellingham's movement. Palmer can switch with Foden/Saka dependent on form.

Not really. It's a problem area. He and his team will have watched the alternatives.

Well based on him being the only fit option it looks like Joe Gomez will have to fill in at LB as he has done for Liverpool regularly this season?

Stirlings decision to leave city when he did is looking even more catastrophic now
