Well based on him being the only fit option it looks like Joe Gomez will have to fill in at LB as he has done for Liverpool regularly this season?
Gomez was really good filling for Robertson as an attacking LB

As an LFC fan I can confirm that was the case. He's played all across our backline at times this season and been one of our most consistent performers.

Trent.

As above I know I have LFC bias, but he's the best passer in the squad and offers a different option to the like of Foden, Belingham and Palmer. He's also an option at set pieces.

It won't be though because he wants 2 holding midfielders.
Bit difficult with the squad he has picked for anyone to come into that team. Do you drop any of the front 4 and play Foden out of his preferred position and bump Bellingham further forward
I think both Foden and Bellingham are too good to drop, he has to make it work. Rice and Kane are the other 2 that have to play.

How much is Southgate paid a year to get a tune out of that lot? About £2m IIRC, should be one of the easiest jobs in football.

I get the attraction of Alexander Arnold. Particularly his understanding with Saka. We've a glut of quality going forward but we need strengthening defensively. We need a player who can do what Philips did alongside Rice at the last Euros.

No shortage of people who think they could do a better job.

Mind you, they were hailing Grealish as The Answer not that long ago.

Walker at LB?

Probably do as good a job as anyone we've got.

We always seem to have way more RBs than LBs.

Can't we just sack him and appoint Klopp?

I wonder if the FA bigwigs actually have the balls to do that?

As others have pointed out, we're very exposed at left back. I can't see Luke Shaw being match fit, at least not sufficient to play several games in a short period. Indeed he (Shaw) may well be deemed not fit enough to make the final 26. Looks like Gomez or Trippier will fill in instead, but not ideal. Surprised Southgate hasn't included a young left back such as Rico Lewis or Tyrick Mitchell.

The fact people are thinking of playing Trent as a midfielder at an international tournament is more laughable

Whilst I agree rashford shouldn’t be going , I’m not sure there is a case for grealish who has arguably performed worse in a much better team :

Isn't Rico Lewis a RB?

Think he played LB for England against North Macedonia and is regarded as versatile. But he's not in the 33 anyway; looks like Southgate will monitor Shaw's fitness and rely on Gomez or (more likely) Trippier to do the job. He described Shaw as a "long shot" to make the Euros.

Walker, Stones, Maguire and Trippier may well be our back four on June 16th. Probably adequate for the group games, but beyond that I'm less confident.

Happy for Tripper to captain, but this is such a pointless game. I expect a typical Southgate 'convincing' 1-0 win against a "challenging opponent".

The left back situation is likely what will result in us underperforming this tournament.

We have phenomenal attacking players - virtual "cheat codes" in the form of Bellingham, Palmer, Saka, Foden etc but they all need space to play, and most prefer to cut inside, giving the defense the choice of chasing a rampaging wing-back or man marking the attacking player. To set that up we must have a left footed left back who can drag defenders down the outside then cross in, but that's exactly what we are missing.

At the last Euros we only really had one side of the field playing together, which really good teams figured out - like Italy, where for the first 20 minutes we looked like Brazil, but then they closed us down.

Whilst not 100% perfect, Trippier has played there before for England and is a solid player. Gomez has covered that spot very well for Liverpool this season too even though LB is not his natural position. He has been excellent.

Still think central defence is the major concern. Hopefully Rice can provide excellent DM coverage in the Euros.
