Don't miss near post always miss far post. Errrrr...... How about don't miss.
Missing the near post is a simple waste. Missing the far post gives a chance of the keeper spilling it to a striker, or a shot becoming a cross. Keeper is also always blamed for letting a goal in at the near post, so they are predisposed to guarding that post over the far post. Far post is the better bet.

Just how the laws of physics have been circumvented to allow for this amazing phenomena hasn't been explained by said pundits.
People saying "this phenomena" really grates. If you don't know how to use the word, don't use it, or at least learn how to use it first. This phenomenon. (singular)
These phenomena. (plural)

"Big ask." It's a big task or a lot to ask but it cannot be a big ask. .
If stylistically you don't like the phrase "it's a big ask", then that's your opinion and you're entitled to it, but grammatically these things happen in English all the time.If English was like many other languages where the various parts of speech have rigid roles and cannot change their function, "it's a big ask" wouldn't be possible, but in English it is legitimate to use nouns as verbs ("to pen a letter", "to trouser some money") and to use verbs as nouns ("it's a big ask"). In fact so flexible is our language that you can use pretty much anything as anything. Shakespeare himself did it ("But me no buts" - using a conjunction as a verb and a noun in the same sentence).
A big ask is not quite the same thing as a big task, so there is some justification in using the expression to give a different shade of meaning.

Superb. Quite probably the finest post ever to appear in the Football forum, if not the whole of Piston Heads. If English was like many other languages where the various parts of speech have rigid roles and cannot change their function, "it's a big ask" wouldn't be possible, but in English it is legitimate to use nouns as verbs ("to pen a letter", "to trouser some money") and to use verbs as nouns ("it's a big ask"). Wenger - we played with great spirit...
Wenger could have a whole thread to himself on this subject. But his best one has to be 'I didn't see it'.
"Great character"
"Great commitment"
He annoys me big time.
Anything by Mark "I hate the Arsenal" Bright, Adrian Chiles, Andy Townsend, Craig Burley, Pat Nevin, Alan Hansen.
Who'd have thought all the above could make Martin Keown and Gary Neville sound intelligent and almost eloquent?

I'm surprised at your inclusion of Pat Nevin there. He doesn't strike me as an idiot particularly. Martin Keown seems to make a lot of sense to me as well."Great character"

The praise etc being lavished on John Terry.
That man is a bloody disgrace to football. Anus ignorant, family a bunch of domesticated gypsies, one of the dirtiest, cynical players ever to grace a football pitch,( Vinnie Jones included) let alone wear the England Shirt, and picks up the cup when he want even playing. i Refuse to watch England whilst that piece of racist ( alledgedly) mouth breathing, pond life is wasting somebody elses oxygen. And i bet his IQ is less than his body weight in kilos

The whole underdog partisan tone taken by commentators when it's say Germany v Trumpton 3rd XI.
Every time the plucky but doomed side have a touch, there's a forced explosion of excitement...and it's a dangerous ball through...even though a cretin in a hurry can see that Miroslav was all over it like a cheap coat the second it left Pugh (jr)'s boot en route to Grub. It's patronising at best & I hate it. Commentators should report the news, not make it up.
