Discussion
Interesting discussion on MOTD re Cahill's dive (and it was a blatant dive) and no 2nd yellow.
Danny Murphy said it had to be a pen or a yellow card. That's plain wrong. The referee is entitled to think there was contact or a coming together so not a dive, but not think the coming together was a foul, so no pen either. Also the ref can just not see it, in which case he is right not to give a pen or a yellow card. Or he can see it, think it may have been a foul but not be sure, in which case no pen and no yellow card.
Secondly, referees are under standing instruction not to book for diving when there was contact, regardless of how minimal or how overblown the reaction. So if he thought there was contact (and I think there was) he's right not to give the pen and it wasn't a foul and not to give the yellow as there was minimal contact.
Maybe they should be encouraged to book for diving after minimal contact, but that's not where we're at at the moment.
Danny Murphy is paid to be a pundit and I'm not, so if I can know the current law and interpretation, so should he.
Shame, because I think Murphy is quite good as a pundit.

Indeed, but that was regardless of any diving
Stating the obvious is obvious. We do not have the calibre of players, the finances or the location to attract the best players, so granted we were always on a hiding to nothing. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work that one out. Disappointed with Cahill's dive, it's not in his character (and he was crap at it). I can see why it wasn't given though - Ref was 25 yards behind the three players looking at a tangle of legs. All the talk of "Card or Pen" is nonsense - players can stumble. Cahill dived, however, as it was proved on TV.
Willian and Costa also unnecessary.

I agree. Shearer has said the same as Murphy before and it shows that footballers should't be lawyers. Refs are perfectly entitled to say that they cant be sure enough to penalise by giving a penalty, or penalise by booking the "diver". But people then just say they are "bottling it". But it would be perfectly normal in a court of law.Danny Murphy said it had to be a pen or a yellow card. That's plain wrong. Barca aren't the side that they were so I'd fancy City's chances of an upset
