The trouble is whatever Roberto’s abilities were his confidence will be shot to pieces. That’s not good for a goalkeeper.
Totally agree, especially having watched the training goalkeeper come in and do a much better job of it. I get that goalkeepers are a different breed from outfield players, the mentality is totally different - but when Fab has a very wobbly back four in front of him (lets not kid ourselves they are poor) he excels, Roberto flounders. coldel said:
Haller interview today, he is calling out how much he enjoyed playing up front with Antonio, saying the team responded to them both being there. Almost undermining Pelle having ignored this for 2 months. He is right, but you do wonder how much Pelle has the changing room.
Quite right - believe that he scored his goals in the BL playing in a two so to leave him up top alone's stupid. Martin hasn't made any saves that Roberto wouldn't, the love in is because he's West Ham via his Dad and the team's confidence has grown with Roberto out so they've ground out a couple of wins. If Martin had been subject to what Roberto has suffered with his own fans he'd be the same nervous wreck I;m sure. The bloke isn't up to it by a country mile but our " loyal best in the land" fans haven't helped one bit.

I wouldnt agree, the triple save against Chelsea (alright it was blown for offside in the end but he didnt know) was an example of where Roberto would have probably not made it - there are a few others I have seen where his technique in pushing the ball away from goal (and not into it) for normal saves shows he breeds more confidence in the defence. It isn't a measure of save count, it is the confidence he gives the defence around him - Roberto doesn't instill that, Martin does. I think its a number of factors, making good solid saves, not looking as shaky but also seems calmer between the posts - Martin has nothing to lose and everything to gain, he shouldnt even be playing. However back up keeper Roberto has to prove he is worth that position and has failed quite spectacularly so far. All that said clearly Martin isn't going to be a premier league keeper medium-long term, but he is creating a better defensive unit being there than Roberto.coldel said:

Yes didn't the other chap go off to Real or something?I think Pelle looks at him and thinks, big guy, will work up top on his own. Which is bizarrely simplified!

I'm saying they haven't really had a level playing field.

I guess it depends on if its a circular reference, has the defence played better because Martin is there. In which case I think the plaudits are justified and are not really based on misty eyed heritage of a player. I'm not defending Roberto at all,I said "the bloke isn't up to it by a country mile".

Still gobsmacked that Martin got the same injury as Fab. Only West Ham.

With out a doubt. The relief was palpable.
