The Official Manchester United Thread [Vol 5]
Discussion
First big Friday night fixture is nearly with us sadly I'll miss Rachel Riley's debut but as I'll be at OT hopefully to see Pogba's. That does depend on what time the seal gets broken tomorrow afternoon.
What's the consensus on Friday night games? I'm looking forward to a leisurely Friday afternoon pub crawl to the game but my proximity to OT does give me an advantage I've no worries over Friday trains or traffic.
A season long experiment or here to stay?

Cancel the wedding, tell her she will always be second to United anyway, so get used to it, and tell her you'll marry her some other time.
PS, let us know how you get on .
Oh no, we got married in June in an odd year so that we wouldn't have any league or Euros/WC issues. This is one of her mates weddings, I will know exactly 4 people there (including the B&G)PS, let us know how you get on .
I've already told her if I disappear at 8 she can expect me back at 8:45

Wayne Rooney V's Bournemouth:-

About 10 cock ups there that should be Once A Game examples of incompetence or bad luck. He is in truly awful form.https://streamable.com/fu20
I think you hit the nail on the head I too think his form has dipped and as a result confidence drops. You see it all the time with forward players. I think he'll play himself back in to form, I don't believe he's a spent force just yet. Yes, his best years may be behind him now but I still truly believe he will play an important part moving forward.
He'll become the leading United goalscorer of all time and as a result deserves our respect and admiration.

I feel like Rooney is getting cut far too much slack for his performances in the past few years. When was his last genuinely top class season? 2010 I'd say.
He has his moments, but doesn't seem to ever stay in form for more than about 5-6 games before dipping off massively for another 2-3 months. I would like to see us play a few games without him in the team at all and see how the team works then and play people in the correct positions instead of trying to mould Rooney into a centre mid. He doesn't have it in him imo to play there.

Rooney is an enigma. Nearly our top goalscorer of all time, yet never loved. Some of his performances look very poor, but when he's out of the side, we miss him.
Now that we have a stronger side, I think he may well play less games, but let's not forget Maureen tried to sign him for Chelsea.

I do feel that as Rooney has got older he has fallen into a black hole in terms of his best position on the football pitch. When he was younger he could play 9 or 10 in the same game as he was fit, able to drop deep to collect the ball, then bust a gut to get back into the box and score the goal. You could give him a free role because he gave you so much on the field in terms of scoring goals, passing, energy etc.
These days he can still score goals, and is passing is still their but doesn't have the legs any more. Therefore you can play him as a 9 as he doesn't run past the last man, and continues to hunt for the ball so doesn't keep his shape. You cant play him as a 10 as he doesn't have the touch and skill to take a ball in tight situations, and then beat a man.
He is stuck in a no man's land at the moment and that's why he looks so dreadful on the pitch at times. We have better 9's than him (Rashford/Ibra) and we have better 10's than him (Mata/Mickey).
Push back to midfield? I'd say we have better central midfielders than him, even more so with Pogba coming back.

Let's not forget that Fergie kept benching him in favour of RVP in his last season and notably against Real Madrid who were one of the best sides in Europe and we matched them easily until Nani got sent off.Now that we have a stronger side, I think he may well play less games, but let's not forget Maureen tried to sign him for Chelsea.
If he wasn't the medias wonder kid and England's favourite hero I don't think he'd still be playing for United week in week out.
Read an interesting article yesterday on Rooney, which seems really just to be echoing the same points above.

It's certainly the case that Rooney now has probably the most competition for spaces in the team that he has had for quite some time - there is no obvious 'space' from him to position himself into where there is not already a very strong if not better alternative.
I guess the question now is can he regain sufficient form? Has complacency from the lack of recent competition (both in the squad and in terms of winning trophies) in the last few years, plus the natural aging process, blunted him to the extent he can't get it back to a level we'd all want to see?
