Whilst not one to normally give you guys solace I wouldn't beat yourselves up about Memphis, it wasn't a fair fight. LvG gave him his break in the national team, helped him with some discipline issues. A Dutch journalist wrote in a book that Memphis would have VanGaal on his shirt if he could.

So its not like we beat you in a straight up battle, he was always coming to Utd unless we didn't want him.

Totally agree Keyser - my issue is , surely LFC knew this too , rumours are LFC leaked the story about Depay after the villa game - try get the fans attention on a BIG signing and take away the ste that was our effort in the semi final
Nah you have to have a crack I think and it was fair that you did. Depay has been the main man for PSV the last 2 seasons, he is taking a risk at Utd that he will fulfil his potential and become a mainstay for us. You could easily have said to him that you guarantee first team football and that may have turned his head. Also there was always the chance that as much as he rates LvG and vice versa he wasn't a fit at Utd.

So I can understand the approach, PSG also entertained him in an attempt to lure him.

the only thing we could have possibly have offered him over Utd is a guaranteed starting place every week.
We could have offered more money. But we didn't and we never will under the current structure.

We could spend more than we do if the owners chose to do so.

what is the current wage structure of LFC?
I don't know - the public information has us 5th in the salary league.

Aren't we right up against our FFP limit?
My position on that is that the "punishments" relate to playing in Europe.

So I say "fk them" and let's try and win the league. Not aim to finish "top 4".

But that won't happen.

Sounds like a completely reckless plan to me.

So we spend X tens of millions extra trying to sign players, plus X extra millions per year in wages. It is blatantly obvious that we're ignoring FFP rules, chances are we get banned from European competition for more than a year or two, plus quite possibly have a transfer ban imposed on us (in the same way that Barca did/have).

And that's only to compete for the league (IF we actually get to sign those players) - no guarantee we'll actually win it.

And even if we do win it, we then won't be able to play in Europe, which could then impede us signing players anyway!
Depressing isn't it?

Will just try to be happy with coming 5th and 6th with the occasional excursion higher up the league.
I really don't think there is a magic formula to consistently outperform salary spend.

No buts really - that rapport is the crucial point. Nothing else. Once Van Gaal wanted him, we could have been the Real Madrid of the Prem, it would have made no difference.
I don't know the player but i can imagine he signed for UTD for LESS than he was being offered elsewhere - can you?

Van Gaal is great and all that but they have got out the howitzer in the transfer market. Big fees AND big salaries.

So say we didn't sign all those players last summer and instead spent £120m on 2 players.

I'm assuming one striker and the other would either be a midfielder or CB. Assume neither get injured and both have great first seasons (unlikely, in fact almost unheard of). Our striker would have burned out by March. We would have also had a personnel crisis in central defence, we would have lacked options on the wings (both in defence and midfield), nor would we have had any plan B.

In essence you want us to do what Chelsea did. Unfortunately Fabregas has gone off the boil lately and Costa has been injured a lot this year. Luckily they've got a world class spine to fall back on. We don't.
You're in a good mood today, Jammy.

So could we have signed Depay? I would bet you £20k a week extra on whatever United are paying him, he would have signed.
You would be wrong, there is one simple reason we have Depay and he's a slightly mad dutchman.

They have an almost father and son relationship (he has Memphis on his shirt as he doesnt want to acknowledge his fathers name) and by all accounts was heading down the Ravel Morrison route of throwing it all away until LvG chose him for the national team and took him under his wing. He credits LvG for his personal and professional growth.

This one for once was not all about money

The game when you beat us 3-0 at OT was a real low point for me. Mainly because you were ste and there for the taking.

Bearing in mind I am a scouser who has lived in Manchester for the whole of the Fergie era, that means I have had A LOT of lows!

Rumours? That yank ex FSG guy was talking about it several weeks ago on Twitter. He has a whole load of LFC followers clearly, from some of his comments. The story was out there - but the story wasn't that he was coming; just that we were after him. Just as we're after several other players.

Trouble is, 1 person on a web forum says "rumours are that..." and all of a sudden, people read it as a fact, when it isn't, necessarily. I'm not suggesting you have made it up btw - but some people who say "rumours are that..." have just made something up because they believe it's probably the case.

Posted this in the Utd thread but thought you chaps might be interested.

“Up until about 48 hours ago he wasn’t going to go there [Manchester United],” Dutch journalist Marcel van der Kraan told Hawksbee and Jacobs. “There was a bigger chance he would go to PSG or Liverpool.

“We understand Liverpool were real serious contenders, because United weren’t involved. He had a strong favour for the Premier League and he was flattered by the interest from Liverpool. Bolo Zenden and Dirk Kuyt told him he would get playing time there and it would be a great set-up for him to develop.

“But what happened in the last 48 hours was Man United became aware of the fact PSG were prepared to go a long, long way financially [to sign him]. The money PSG are offering to players is, I understand, flabbergasting.

“But Man United attracts players much more than PSG, even though they’ve had a difficult one and a half years. PSG can lure them only with money.

“Depay had not heard that much from United. They wanted to be kept in the loop, but that was it, but then came the moment when he could be signing for someone else and then ‘bang’, there was a real forceful hand at Old Trafford and from that moment on they wanted to do it. And they did it.

“It just shows the determination they have to get things right for next season.”

Makes sense if we have a budget - we need the money to go on a decent striker - get Raheem signed and get his head back in the game

Tony Barrett - saying BR is talking out of his arse again lol

He says he could not be more sure that LFC were indeed in for Depay - wonder if he is just talking st or FSG have told him to say that so doesnt look like we keep losing out on players?
That's what I was getting at earlier, it has a ring of 'well I never fancied you anyway' to it. Just a bit childish and unnecessary, he should perhaps be showing Sterling some more love instead.

Rodgers on Gerrard sub: "It was to give him the acclaim on what will probably be the last time he plays here"

At 1-1 when needing a win?
I genuinely believe he would be better liked and more respected if eh just shut up occasionally, he's a walking PR disaster.
