Thinking of getting an Impreza WRX - what to look out for

Direct Line did require a tracker so at that point I stopped filling in the online form although they then sent me an email with a good price so I'll need to ring them.
They did exactly the same with me (and I do have a tracker) and then doubled the quote when I phoned up to talk to them.Insuring the Impreza has been the only non fun part about owning it TBH.

Update: just had an email from Keith Michaels declining to give me a quote - strange.

Keith Michaels were the only company who refused to insure my Impreza and i have been driving for 30 years with a clean license !Direct Line did require a tracker so at that point I stopped filling in the online form although they then sent me an email with a good price so I'll need to ring them.

Why on earth would KM not insure your Impreza. They've been doing them for donkeys years. Gary Moulson is the man there and a fellow scooby owner. Hard bloke to get hold of but they do a good deal on scoobs.
You tell me ?? Every other insurance brokers i tried gave me a reasonable quote including mainstream ones. This was the email I got with the subject "declined"
Thank you for your recent Motor Insurance enquiry.

Many Thanks,

The only thing I can think is that it's due to my postcode. I used a website the other day to check it's rating for insurance and on an A-F scale it's an E.

That may be the issue then. Perhaps your area is too much of a risk for them but not other brokers. I'm sure every broker/underwriter has their own criteria as to what is an acceptable level of risk before they will refuse.Thank you for your recent Motor Insurance enquiry.

I insured both my modified WRX wagon and my Jag for a few years with Gary and was never refused insurance. The only reason i went elsewhere is because Gary was always such a pain to get hold of and the last time i tried for several weeks i never even got replies to voicemail or emails. Every time i called he was on the phone. Nightmare!!
It's all it can be, I'm just still surprised that it's an "E" area. I once accidentally left my car and house keys on the wall outside the house for an hour or so, they were still there when I remembered thankfully. Plus the fact I'm not trying to insure a Ferrari, just a £6k Subaru but ho-hum!
Another question, when I did the test drive at the weekend the exhaust was disappointingly quiet, can I make it more burbly, and will that be a mod that needs declaring on the insurance?

I think the 2.5 from 2006 had equal length headers or some other subtle exhaust change which substantially muted the Subaru Burble. Twin scroll turbos also do this I believe.
Getting it back without it sounding like saturday night in a McDonalds carpark may not be cheap or easy. A Manifold swap is non-trivial on these cars.
2004-2005 2.0's have the burble you're after.

They aren't equal length headers on the 06/07 WRX's. They have Standard cast iron unequal length exhaust manifolds like the 2.0ltr cars. What makes them quiet are is the cats. Needs decatted uppipe and final scrubber cat. Leave the main cat in place for MOT time and it should burble just fine.
Any self respecting independent subaru specialist could supply and fit the decatted pipes. You should remap though to avoid any overboost issues and get the best out of your machine.
You can't go modding the subaru exhaust system, releasing all that back pressure caused by the pre-cat and scrubber cat without there being some adverse affect somewhere along the line.
If you're going to spend good money on modding a car don't do a half hearted job and not remap it. After a remap the car will go like a rocket, sound awesome and probably be a bit more economical.

It would be handy if you kept the whole old exhaust system if you went fully decat, then come MOT time you swap back to the old factory exhaust system and do the MOT.
However, leaving just the main cat in situ and changing everything else for stainless steel items means you don't have to faff about swapping exhausts every year for the MOT.
So long as the factory main cat/downpipe is kept on the car you will get through MOT emissions testing with flying colours and have the burble you crave.
You should look at stainless steel replacement exhaust parts that are the same diameter tubing and flange fittings as factory parts therefore your new SS exhaust bits mate up to the factory downpipe/cat.
Hayward & Scott or Miltek do very high quality systems that mate up to the factory flanges and diameter tubing. They sound really sweet too. Not cheap but awesome quality that will last you a lifetime.
