Interesting project, but seems to have too short a timescale. Would be great if they did it, but it seems a bit quick. Be interesting how the commercial side of space flight advances now.

Those crazy Dutch.

A one way trip - I like it. I'm already drawing up a list of people I'd like to be put on this mission.

I'll bet £5,000 it doesn't happen on that timescale, if at all.

The interesting thing is that no longer is it a Govt funded project, or even a 'commercial' project like Branson, but a 'media event' like an interplanetary Big Brother, paid for by advertising, hosted not by James Burke but Davina McCall and starring not astronauts but retards looking for fame...

Is that the price we have to pay to get to Mars?

Doesn't bear thinking about. Although eviction from "The House" would have slightly more serious consequences than a chat on the sofa with the programme host.

It smells a bit whiffy to me, in all honesty. Could be a scam.

Well all they need is:

a) The money
b) The technology

Bearing in mind there is currently no money and we can't get a microwave oven to Mars without smashing it to bits, what can possibly go wrong? spin

Most of the recent missions to Mars have been extremely successful.

I like the idea of a oneway trip provided it is the start of a colonization rather than a publicity stunt more a founding fathers get there, get it habitable, work towards being able to build their economy and a transport system back to earth.

I expect that non government will start to get further, as with Dragon, but methinks these expect too much. Over optimistic?

From the web site
"Mars One will build a replica of the Mars settlement on an Earth desert to help the astronauts prepare and train, and for a realistic environment in which to test the equipment."

The settlement in the desert to train seems a tad unreal given the temperature and pressure on the real thing. This is where I thought the Moon might be a better candidate. But then they did train on and around Erf for the Moon, but the Moon is close by.

But, hey ho, good luck if they go for it.

This from 2005 and the Mars Society Desert Research Station in Utah:

I think those bases are normally done to test the hydroponics, life support the stuff, as well as whether it turns people crackers, I think?

I think the "crackers" part has already been verified.

I saw that experiment on some documentary or another. You have to test it. But I wonder if Mars needs more.

Well, of they are going to do a big brother, it might as well make itself useful.

True!

But a little more investigation reveals..

http://mars-one.com/faq-en/22-faq-mission-features...

Taken from their FAQ. Looks like it was written by someone who's been drinking too much coffee wink

Scary.

  • What would 'people' do?
  • What happens if you need a hospital?
  • 'Live there forever' (!) reads as Drop and Forget.
  • How do they select their candidates - are they ex inmates or nuns.. is there a criteria?
And that skinny tt comes across as no better than Mark Zuckerburg but without the success and with a whole heap of more risk.

It will never get off the ground hehe

You need to copy the films. Six bored astronauts wear khaki vests and argue a lot. Two are female, one of whom is vaguely Asian, and one of the men is black. The captain will get killed early on and the Asian woman will take over because she shouts a lot. The black guy will get killed just before the end.

Day 152 in the Big Brother capsule -

Daaaave is in the hydroponics bay checking the PH levels of the recycled water in reservoir 'D'. He has to check it with a bit of paper, and compare it with chart 'c' from manual AC-13A.

Pedroooo is in the habitat section cataloging the rations, and material supplies that arrived in the most recent restocking capsule that arrived 36 hours ago. He has to use the barcode machine to register every item, and ensure it gets tagged into the inventory database, and double checked with mission control on Earth to ensure nothing is missing, or extra.
