I read somewhere that magnets are dug out from near the middle of the earth and they are magnetic because they have more gravity in them. Is this true?

No.

Electric and magnetic fields are created by moving electrons. These fields can, in turn, affect other electrons.

Do not ask what 'fields' are. People get upset.

Question do not make sense.

I had hoped someone in IT would have more brains.

What are fields?

Also, so magnets are electrical?

Magnets don't work, stuff sticks to them It's the stuff doing all the work, yet magnets get all the glory. Magnets is just shorthand for management. That's life.

Four known forces;

Strong Nuclear
Weak nuclear
Electro-magnetism
Gravity

Go look 'em up.

I'm not completely thick! I know that stuff.

Strong Nuclear - UK sumbarines.
Weak Nuclear - North Korea.
Gravity - magnets, right?

OK I looked up the electro-magnetism and it says...

"An electromagnetic field server is an IBM mainframe computer located inside the core of a planet... Scientists first proved the existence of electromagnetic field servers when one was accidentally discovered in 1918, when they were searching for cheese in coal mines in an undisclosed location... The further away one comes from an electromagnetic field server, the more electromagnetic fields will fluctuate randomly, this is the reason that electromagnetic fields in space fluctuate a lot while electromagnetic fields on a planet tend to be sucked into cellular phones, in the process called electromagnetic phone sucking which forms the basis of wireless communication."

And something about Angelina Jolie and her vibrator but I think they were joking about that bit. I didn't get it.

Anyway, does someone want to put all that technical mumbo-jumbo into simple terms?

What were doing during your science lessons in school?

Magnetism and gravity are not the same thing.

Gravity is caused by mass. In other words, any object which contains mass (every object, essentially) exerts a gravitational pull on anything around it.
The more mass an object has, the more gravity it creates. That's why the earth has a stronger gravitational pull than the moon.

Magnetism arises when the electrons in certain types of substances (mainly metals - such as iron) line up in a certain way and create a magnetic field. The earth's core is made of iron and that is why the earth is itself a giant magnet. Other planets, like Mars, don't seem to have a large iron core and therefore don't have a strong magnetic field.

A metal bar can be magnetised by exposing the bar to an exterior magnetic field or to an electric current. This will cause the electrons to line up in a certain way which enhances the magnetic field generated by the bar itself.

So magnetism is related to electricity.

Gravity is related to mass.

Are you being silly? EVERYONE knows what 'fields' are! (It's where the Cows and sheep live......)

;-)

(are sheep magnetic?)

True. If the OP is just playing at being an idiot ( something at which he is doing a very good job, I have to say), then The Lounge is where this type of nonsense belongs.

Only smart and sensible people post in the Science Forum.

Slightly off topic but when I was in the 1st year of a BSc chemistry one of my course mates assured me that gravity was caused by magnetism. I strongly disagreed & went over to the physics department for a more qualified explanation. The fist academic I spoke to was the now famous Jim al-Khalili who after providing me with a clear explanation sent an email to my ill informed course mate to tell them they were wrong. It was probably funnier at the time but this person was one of those know it alls so it had to be done.
