Mythbusters fail to bust sniper myth
Discussion
I don't understand this thread at all. Who thinks a non VTO Jet can take off without lift? Does anyone really think the landing gear of a jet has anything to do with it generating lift? The wheels can spin at 1,000 mph it's not going to lift a millimetre. Stick the conveyor in a wind tunnel with a bloody big fan and sure, it will take off. Does that require an experiment to prove though?
Saving Private Ryan - it's a film FFS, it's not a non-fiction documentary. Not very entertaining if Private Daniel Jackson was just a 'pretty good shot' and had to fire off about 5 rounds just to wing the German is it?

I remember years ago watching an episode of Myth Busters in which they wanted to see if a jet could take off on a conveyor belt. They proved it could but the experiment was seriously flawed in many ways as a jet can only take off if the air passing over and under the wing is sufficient enough to cause lift. Without lift, if the wheels just turn the jet will never take off as it is effectively not moving.
It doesn't matter how many times this gets explained someone always comes back with..."It won't take off cos it's not moving"
Argggggh.
The speed of the ground does not affect the speed of the plane. If it did the plane would come to a sudden stop when the wheels touch the ground.

but if the jets produce 200mph of thrust say and the wheels are on a conveyor belt that is countering at the same speed it does not move
Normally, I'm really nice and polite. Noobs like you deserve, in general, a little latitude. After all, we've pissed away years of our lives on this place, and we know the ins and outs. Ducking and diving, dodging the dibble. You know the score. A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bat, and all that. But on this occasion, it is with regret that I have to inform you that I am moved to invite you to Fack. Right. Off.

Wouldn't it be polite to tell him why it would take off. I could do with a refresher, too. As I remember it, the question was ambiguous or omitted something vital.
No.It would not.
Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.
And sometimes you have to be cruel just because.
sorry folks, I had to

quite, so why will spinning them faster STOP the aircraft from taking off? MiseryStreak said:
