Does this help?

The Sun only lights up one half of the moon at any time. In this diagram, the inner ring of moons show how the Moon is being lit (by the Sun) as it moves round the Earth - The outer ring shows how it appears to you, standing on the Earth

A bit smug there Eric! You were clearly born a few hundred years too late and could have solved the worlds astronomical oddities with your innate knowledge at the drop of a hat

Not being smug at all. I obviously was taught properly at school and read some books at an early age which explained well what was going on .

I had misconceptions of my own when I was small that were equally silly to thinking that the crescent moon was caused by eclipses - but not that particular one.
