Not being a betting man at all, I'm guessing that £119 worth of bets isn't much money? Therefore, not many people believe that the world will end on 21st December 2012?

And did you miss all the previous ends of the world predictions? In my lifetime there have been at least 20.
OI! I've got first dibs, further up the page!

It isn't a lot, but it does demonstrate that there are some fools out there and remember that is also only one bookmaker so there is almost certainly more out there that want to win a bet that they could never win.

Everyone is very definitely not talking about it, unless you spend all your time in the tinfoil millinery areas of the internet, and they have DVDs to sell to the gullible, so of course they're going to bang on about it. Put the Zecharia Sitchin books down, have a nice cup of tea and calm down! Nibiru is not coming, there is no massive NASA conspiracy and the poles are not about to flip. Step away from the David Icke forums. Relax.

Think about it this way. If the Mayans were so good at predicting things, why didn't they see the end of their own civilisation coming? They seem to have overlooked that. I note the doom mongers have shifted their prophecies from literal end of the World stuff (impacts, floods and the like) to more new age "conciousness shifts" ideas as the date fast approaches. All tied in to the conspiracy meme and a general distrust of authority. We've gone from a Revelations style ending to an "awakening", which is quite convenient if you're writing books about it, as you need much less tangible evidence. Those espousing the "incoming planet X" theory look like (bigger) idiots as the date approaches and no such body is visible, yet when you shift it to woolly new age "awakenings", you don't actually need evidence, as you can just twist behaviour to suit. Fewer people buying newspapers? "It's a consciousness shift as people awaken to the corruption of the MSM!" etc etc. Much harder to debunk, as it becomes faith rather than evidence based. The beauty of building a culture of distrust is of course that you can discard any even remotely official position as "part of the MSM disinformation campaign!" and appeal to people by convincing them they are better because they alone have been "awakened". Thus you get people claiming the Moon is in fact a hologram and that NASA is "hiding" Nibiru using cloaking devices and mind control. You can't possibly have rational debates with people like that, so really best to not worry about them.

Chill out smile

This made me laugh; people are actually claiming that the Moon is a hologram? And that NASA is hiding Nibiru?

I feel like a right idiot now! But I just wanted to put my mind at rest, so thank you! smile

Read some real science and come back when you have digested it. Say sometime in 2022.

Technically the world will not end on the 21st but a chain of catastrophic events will trigger worldwide disasters...

Check the calenders to see if any important world leader will make any public appearance on the 21st...

Oh please....

ETA - have links to these calendars by any chance, or are you just regurgitating something you read elsewhere? You're making the claim, so presumably have the evidence to support it.

The clue is in the word 'hyped'. It means making a big deal out of nothing (the motive for which is usually ratings or money)

If everybody who did this went to jail then we might have a better starting point from which to think sensibly!

Various agencies including the AA have been asked their advice on what to do in the case of the end of the world. They have all entered into the spirit of the occasion. biggrin

With so much press and everyone talking about it, I have (naturally) become quite worried about the End of the World happening on the 21st od December 2012.
I just wanted to ask the question; Will the end of the world happen on the 21st of December 2012???
This place seemed to be the right place to post the question
Of course not. I've got a Family Guy 2012 calendar that ends on the 31st December. That's the date of the end of the world, obviously, because there are no 2013 dates. Seth MacFarlane and his mates clearly knows more than these so-called 'Mayans'.
