I remember years ago watching an episode of Myth Busters in which they wanted to see if a jet could take off on a conveyor belt. They proved it could but the experiment was seriously flawed in many ways as a jet can only take off if the air passing over and under the wing is sufficient enough to cause lift. Without lift, if the wheels just turn the jet will never take off as it is effectively not moving.

Today I found a video about the sniper on sniper myth. This is based partly on the Saving Private Ryan myth. In this video the myth busters catagorically prove the shot to be a myth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1U8YVWyMYY&fea...

However, I watched a documentary on the real story behind saving private ryan where they actually recreated the shot and proved it could be done to a certain distance (more than the 100 yards tried in MB) and managed it. They said it couldnt be done at some one in a church tower due to the angles and arc required but they did prove it over a level shot.

However MB failed to do the shot so they conclude it is still a myth which calls into question all their work on items such as the jet on a conveyor belt.

Thought this was the story around a marine sniper in Vietnam. A gentleman by the name of Carlos Hathcock. Just finished the book, the gun with the scope went missing after the claimed event. Not sure what to make of it myself.
Watch the doc on Saving Private Ryan

The doc on Saving Private Ryan was flawed as well. They said that the shot could be done at 100 yards but not at 400yards due to the ballistic trajectory required, meaning that the bullet would be dropping at too steep an angle.

Except that in the film, the shot is take from the ground and up to a 4th floor window. So probably an angle of 30 degrees or more. Now the same principle may cause that shot to also be impossible but as the documentary failed to test this and instead tried a 0 degree elevation shot at 400 yards, who knows.
Yes but at least on the doc they did the 100 yard shot, on MB they couldnt manage it so said it was not possible.

Also as for the plane, if there is no airflow over and under the wing how does it generate lift?

but if the jets produce 200mph of thrust say and the wheels are on a conveyor belt that is countering at the same speed it does not move
