Having this discussion with the missus earlier. (I've read Asimov's book, she's only seen the film. I stopped watching when Will Smith crashed the MV Augusta. Knowing the film industry, several Augustas, but, leaving that highly annoying point aside...)

With computers advancing at current rates, and humanity's alarming tendency to destroy itself, would/could a computer decide to simply stop humans from doing anything?

No eating (risk of choking)

No drinking (same, but drowning as well)

No sex (VD)

No driving (fairly obvious)

No working

Not even twidling thumbs. (RSI)

Or has she just had nightmares over nothing?

Idiocracy is more likely I think.
I'm inclined to say it's already here...

Well, AI would need to be invented first, after that, what's to stop earth ending up like in The Matrix? Dunno.
That's a quite worrying thought.

TBH I'd say logan's run is more the future.

if not that, then 1984,

and if not that then 28 days later.

Civilisation moves in surges, never continuously forward. It would be very naive to suggest that we are at a tipping point in development for which humanity will only move forward from. I personally think that the American/Western civilisation will crumble, leaving in it's wake one hell of a mess, potentially sending humanity back a few spaces.
So in fact I don't actually think we will get to the point that robots/supercomputers will rule, as I think something will happen before this.

that or zombies
Bits of 1984 are practically certain.

Or World war 3.

Yes, very much.

Have you read 1984? They are living in a post world war state, that's part of the justification for the totalitarian society.

Of course robotics and artificial intelligence will be a feature of the future, but I don't think there will be such a clear divide between humans and robots, with the level of augmentation and nanotechnology we will effectively be the robots, the conflict will be between those who can't afford the 'upgrades' and those who can. This was quite well portrayed in the recent computer game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

The next big leap in technology will be optical computers, at the moment, electronic microprocessors are limiting the speed and capacity of computing. They get too hot and electrons travel too slowly. Optical processors will change everything and lead to huge advances in nanotechnology and artificial intelligence.
I've skimmed through it.

I should have added thatI think World war 3 would pretty much end humanity, hence the use of or.

Have you not seen Wall-E?

That, my friends, is where we're headed.
It's worrying. I think everyone should be made to watch that film and allow it to guide a lot of future decision-making.

A lot of people see the fact it's a Disney animation with cartoon depictions of humans, but in reality it's serious dystopian sci-fi with a veneer of child-friendliness applied for mass-market appeal. Superb film, but yes, very very worrying.
I only watched it a few months ago, Was gobsmacked by it TBH as it's actually quite an accurate portrayal of what's going to happen IMO.
Only we still have bones?

Have you seen Equilibrium? Set after WW3, no one can be trusted with their emotions so the entire population is doped up to minimise their reactions/emotions.
That sounds even worse somehow...

They were saying humanity just survived WW3, it wouldn't survive WW4. Intersting premice, you should watch it.
World war 4 will be easy to survive - avoid the guys with clubs, rocks and sticks, while gathering your own clubs, rocks and sticks.

It's 3 that I'm concerned about...

I think that the US in particular is going to spend itself into bankruptcy trying to keep up technologically and in the export market with China.
Out of curiosity, rather than argument, could you provide some examples of Chinese technological innovation? Not manufacturing of others IP. I just don't recall anything.
Past there are plenty.

Currently however,is more difficult.
