Just seen the most amazing shooting star going over head. Thought it was a firework at first but it went on and on and on. Must have been so close to earth I can't believe what I just saw yikes Was this expected? Did anyone else just see this???

Shooting stars (meteors) are normally very quick and last a split second.

Maybe you saw the ISS?
No chance. I could see this thing breaking up! fking incredible!! I've seen shooting stars for fleeting moments before. This was in a different league

Whatever that was, it was amazing. I was stood in the back garden, string at stars, as I am a nerd! I saw it through the trees at first as a bright light, it was travelling east to west, roughly. It started out as bright as say, the ISS, got brighter and brighter and slowly broke up. Imagine the colour of burning magnesium in school! With orange bits breaking off. Took around 20 seconds to cross the sky. Had to do a full 180 degree turn to follow it. I doubt I will ever see anything like that again.
A+ for description mate. I was too excited/freaked to put it so succinctly!

"[The meteor was] probably 80 miles up or so, high up, moving very fast, actually, 18,000 miles an hour, probably, at least."

Now THAT'S close!
