Rounded wheel stud removal
Discussion
genius wheel refurb company has decided to round off one of the security wheel bolts on our range rover and have rinsed their hands of the rectifying the problem.
I’m no stranger to getting my hand dirty and love a chalenge
Is there un ultra strong bolt extraction tool like the one i once used to get some head bolts out?
The kind with a lhd thread on it but capable of some serious torque as apparently the bolt felt like it was welded to the hub, yeah right…

I had one stuck on my RRsport, I managed to get if off using a set of these. They do a couple of different sets, you just need to make sure the size you need is included in the set.

Flare nut from a brake pipe...

I had an issue like this and ended up drilling it out...
But I've had success on others with the Irwins or the locking nut removal set Laser do. IIRC the Irwins are 3/8" and the Laser are a better 1/2".
You will be a long time drilling a hardened steel wheel bolt out But I've had success on others with the Irwins or the locking nut removal set Laser do. IIRC the Irwins are 3/8" and the Laser are a better 1/2".

Might as well try a nut extractor if so.
Well..
The garage found the key for the wheels, managed to get off 2 of them off then the key rounded, a visit to LR resulted in them repairing the key which got another wheel off but the final wheel…
No go, i ordered the appropriate irwin tool of adaptors (from their measurements) but that was way too small (i was on holiday handling from distance) so they then tried to remove it by the aforementioned welding of bolt to stud, nope, snapped right off.
So i’m back now and have the car to tackle and the larger extractor arrives today, so i’m on a mission to get this wheel off, its a bit of a mess in there after their efforts but looks like a bit of a clean up should leave it clean enough for the extraction tool.
Thanks for interest and input, I will update

I don't know if it's true or not, but when mine was stuck I was told that tightening the wheel nut either side of the one that you are trying to remove can help reducing the pressure holding the stuck one in place. Nothing to loose by trying it I suppose.
It is true if corrosion adhesion, over tightened bolt is a bit different, alloy > steel i find corrosion always happens, old steel wheel you dont get the same problem until rust sets in but that takes longer than a set of tyres or pads last normally, plus i think people are more likely to apply some lube or copper grease with steel wheels, thats what i used to do years ago.Is there a lube you can put on the chamfer and thread of the bolt upon re-install of an alloy wheel?

The new 27mm stud extractor arrived and after digging out some of their weld, it came off easy, just slid the self cutting socket over the top and attached the dewalt ratchet and off it popped, i think the heating and cooling of the welding they did actually loosened it, chuffed.
Excellent. Now offer to train the wheel refurb people in exchange for a discount on the wheel refurb. Gassing Station | Home Mechanics | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
