Most of the time it makes no difference, nothing like a bit of placebo wink
That's emphatically not the case at all.

The cars i'm working on have more torx and ribe fasteners than anything else, and these type of fasteners are not great if you need a good purchase. The head of the ribe screw i managed to free off yesterday had already been sheared off by AN Other, and was on a car that had come from the Essex coast and was/is showing more corrosion underneath than any other car of it's age that I think I've ever seen.

Well, I've got some on the shelf.. I checked and they're in stock all over the country, the online system might be screwed up but the stuff is everywhere!

Just thought I'd resurrect this one. Picked up a can of this today. Left some to soak for a minute or two on the seized lower caliper bolt of my MX5 and it came free.

Irony was the bolt was actually well greased inside.

Recommended.

Just ordered some off eBay for a tenner, which is nothing compared with how much hope I am investing in it!

Total Success!

Used a combination of heat, and a full can of Rost Off Ice, and the stub came right out.

I'm ordering more Wurth Rost Off Ice as soon as I finish this post.

Have to pick myself up a can of this, previous methods of shifting rusty bolts involve a pair of grips and swearing.

Who me ?

First there was Coke for freeing nuts ( I also note bloke across the road sells the powder for a similar , but non motor related purpose) , then there was a mix of paraffin and graphite grease.

Will have to get myself some of this stuff or the wurth stuff, it'll come in handy when im doing my anti rollbar droplinks and wishbones on the pug. Save me getting the angle grinder out everytime!

+1 been using this for a while after a recommendation from another forum. Used as recently as last friday on a reluctant EGR valve - read the instructions and it's top stuff.

How do these magic sprays compare to an oxy/fuel heating torch?

I have oxy/fuel plus a TIG welder in the garage so i can heat stuff to silly hot very easily

Just some things tend not to like silly hot

So i am wondering if they are worth trying

Heat is usually my first 'go to' but its not always appropriate/safe.
I use the 'freeze and release'. If it didn't work I'd look for something else.

So do these sprays make stuff cold?

Liquid nitrogen isn't too expensive whistle

There are loads of fluids out there, and ive probably tried most of them. Ive been working on land rovers for years.
I use GT85, but the main thing I use is a 'slow and steady' approach.

TBH it depends what you compair it against?
WD40 is ste as a release agent, heat followed by ATF does everything i need, even just ATF is better than WD40 otherwise i use GT85
This. 50% mix of acetone and ATF in a spray bottle is better than anything I've ever tried. Way cheaper too...

Ive got a can of Loctite freeze and unlock think that it's name, removing an engine on a mx5 couldn't undo the nuts on the cat covered them in the above left overnight quick spray before I put a socket on it and it came of without a lot of force.

Obviously heat will work better but not ever has hold of a oxeye acetylene at home like most garages do so this stuff works.

Halfords shock and unlock. Plusgas. GT85. WD40. What's the one in the reddish brown and white tin?

None have ever worked for me. I once did a fortnight long regimen of Plusgas 3 to 12 times per day on 3 bolts of the suspension of an e39.

Nada.

Took it to a garage, about 40 seconds with the "hot spanner" and it came off with an impact gun.

I've repeated this time and again. Heat + impact gun == fixed within 10 mins!

There is a lot of difference between an impact gun and a big spanner. One has rotational forces, the other has a big angular force that almost guarantees a failure.

(I might be due a woosh parrot here but...) a hot spanner is an oxy acetylene torch!
