Did someone on here years ago ask if he could import elephants to the uk?
The OP wanted a domesticated elephant, not just some wild, fresh off the plains elephant https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=44...

90kmph, all metric, so 56mph I think.
nope it is in public domain.https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits
Companies limit trucks as 56mph is deemed maximum mpg speed.
In theory trucks could get away with 65mph if you take the plus 10% rule.

The issue in the UK and Europe is the speed limiters. However as we know, speed kills, which is why there have been no recorded accidents involving speed limited trucks since they introduced.
One of the few sensible traffic laws we have is HGVs 58 while cars can do 70 imo.Six Figs said:

No they don't, they are limited to a maximum 56mph under European law, this is despite the actual speed limit on Dc's and Motorways being 60mph. Companies can limit them to whatever they like, as low as 50mph in some cases. https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits

EU law - which we still have to follow much to the annoyance of NP&E - limits trucks to 56mph. So that's what trucks are limited to. It'd be interesting to see if trucks that are only used in UK runs are limited to 60mph in future or keep the 56mph limit and whether upping the limit to 60mph could see more elephant racing as UK trucks attempt to overtake EU trucks?https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits

Simply put OP stop buying stuff, then they ll not be so many on the road?
Or ask yourself this whats the one thing in the whole wide world that doesn't get delivered by a truck at some point?
As every thing else that you can see around you does bar this one thing.
I drive one and believe me theirs nothing worse than pulling out to overtake and them "finding another gear" or not being arsed to drop it back a couple of clicks for 30 seconds.
However as has been stated car drivers are not much better, twice today I was gaining, gaining and pulled out half way upside of the car and they pull away, for me again to catch them and they do exactly the same.
IMO every car driver should have go out in a lorry for the day, then you d see the st we have put up with.
But that's life and that's the job we chose to do.

I don't think banning elephant racing would be practical to enforce. There would need to be some sort of minimum speed differential otherwise all of lane 1 would be sat behind a mobile crane or STGO rig doing 20mph,also you are completely discounting the fact that most truck drivers don't decide to pass for 'no reason', an 8 hour shift at 56 vs an 8 hour shift at 51 can easily be the difference between you making it to your hub and needing to spend the night in the cab.
However I do think banning supermarkets limiting their trucks to 80kph(50mph) and specing trucks well below 10hp/ton would do our roads a world of good.

Make it mandatory that the marginally slower truck - the one that is being overtaken - should slow down further to allow the overtaking truck to complete its overtake and pull back in and away.
The frustrating part is when the slower truck speeds up to prolong the overtake. Increasing speed whilst being overtaken should be illegal.

I propose that trucks be fitted with a KERS device, which they're allowed to activate once a day, that works for a period of a few minutes and also both removes the speed limiter and plays Kickstart My Heart at max volume.
I just fired this track up for the first time - I am now loving the idea of a massive truck hitting some kind of "turbo" button and charging along to this!In reply to the OP; truck driving can be a tough job with a lot of time pressure. So they need to run as fast as they can all the time they can. Imagine your truck is limited to 56mph and the truck in front is limited at 53mph; you would have to overtake and it would take a while. Its just the nature of the situation - let it go basically.
In the words of Kiss FM on distant day when I drove a white van for a living- "Big up, big up, the delivery men!". Without them the economy would stop in about 5 mins flat.
