Horsepower? Id want 380 just to keep up!
LOL 201hp yes :-) Was supposed to be more powerful than the popular 180 but i still think it was a detuned version LOLOne of the older guys at the quarry had just been "upgraded" to a cummins 220 powered borderer, his previous was a MM foden with a 150 (yes in an 8 wheeler).
I smile sometimes when people say their 7.5 tonner is "only a 150" - must be getting old

That foden haulmaster is fantastic! my dad had one for a little while when i was young, he also used to sub on for smith & sons of bletchington, he used to run out of ardley quarrey for them & we used to admire smiths immaculate fleet of fodens, they were spotless & very well looked after.
Fanastic isn't a word i used for it in the ealry 80's - My Dad was "old school" & when we decided I needed a tipper, he said I would get a "proper tool for the job" & not one of those tinny volvo things LOL -- He died 9 years ago, what I would give to have another one of our Volvo / Foden debates LOLThis wonderful F88 and G&A Reefer belongs to my boss. he is considering flogging it as it is not used regularly.

Nearly all the F88's were 290. They did also produce a 240 model but I can't ever remember seeing one among the hundreds of F88/290's i saw over the years. When i worked for GWC (scania pic above) they had a fleet of 278 F10's before we got the Scania's, & the "spare" was a F88 they had owned from new. It was rough & ready, and compared to the 112 quite agricultural but I loved having it for a day or two when mine was off the road.

No - it came with the tag from new
It currently has an engine from an F10 -
any idea what the reason was for that ??It currently has an engine from an F10 -
In F88 days we were still only 32T gross over here, just wondering why any operator would need a tag for european work ? Would be interesting to find out some more history on that old beast, one of the few left that's not blinged up for the shows :-)

I don't know who spec'd it but its design GVW is over 50 tons (can't remember how much off the top of my head) - I've no idea if 4x2 F88's were designed for a lower weight.
It does look much better than most restored examples IMHO -
Quite agree - some of the show 88's are stunners, but nothing like a genuine working tool. I hope the old beast continues to earn a crust for the owner :-)It does look much better than most restored examples IMHO -

Just wondered why we don't see markings like this on rear of trucks/trailers any longer? Is it that they aren't needed due to better rear lighting? Just remember as a kid every truck seemed to have these plates.
becasue the 'long vehicle' plates ( plain yellow with orange / red border) are needed on far more trucks now - which are rather more discreet ironically Gassing Station | Commercial Break | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
