I have finally decided to get a 7.5t tipper. i dont have the licence or o licence but what keeps happening is every month i think 'ill sort that next week' (edit, i have just applied for the o licence, paid for it and uploaded relevant stuff except the newspaper advert which currently i dont know how to do hehe )

of course after about 18mths i haven't done it. i did do the o licence and got to payment stage but ended up leaving it as covid hit and at that time i thought id be out of work.

So by owning it and it costing money sitting there i will have no choice but to do the test etc.

i will have it on laid up cover at the location of the soon to be o licence. speaking to vehicle driving test people they say that i 'should' get passed by june/july with current situation. So should tie in ok with waiting for o licence.

Anyway, i have found one, its in halifax which is so so far away from me its an 8hr round trip which i was going to do tomorrow. until i realised i dont really know what im looking at hehe

Or can anyone recommend someone to have a look? i really dont want to drive 8hrs hehe just hope it doesnt go as they are all like hotcakes at the minute especially one like this.

any tips? this is the truck. sounds perfect! ex council, its a 190. low miles, looks very tidy, manuel and not auto (heard a lot of horror stories and that they are horrible anyway).

Small world hehe

do you know the place? seems to have alright reviews online.

Im thinking of just asking for a video tour and just buying it. id like to think that council owned with a recent mot it should be ok for general stuff. gearbox is not an auto so should be ok......i suppose not a lot else a full inspection might tell me.

Surely even the most penny pinching of councils wouldn't use that for winter maintenance? It certainly wouldn't be used here in Aberdeenshire - it would be a liability and spend all it's time stuck!

The roads are salted 8 months of the year though and it does mean things are noticeably rustier than down south. Should be pretty obvious if it's an issue with a look underneath.
Thankyou smile ill contact the seller today and have a chat about it, hoping the guy above can have a quick look round it too.

Apart from rust maybe the dpf is bad but i suppose i wouldn't know that for a while. I know on these and canters they can be problematic.

I also assume it will have some kind of warranty. The location of its storage is a place which works on hgv's so i can get him to fully check it once its here. bit arse about face but not much else i could do really.

Well pistonheads and its decent people strike again! 2 people have very very kindly offered to go and have a look. Andy above knows what he's looking at so what a god send smile

And regarding driving them, i have had a few mitsubishi canter 3.5t and i have briefly driven an isuzu 3.5t so i know they aren't the most relaxed cruisers out there hehe

But like andy says its all local stuff, the job ive been at today i can actually see from my upstairs window hehe we are generally very local.

Its the payload i want! Should be 4t or very close to it which is huge compared to all the 'proper' 7.5t vehicles. Also they are pretty small and not much bigger than a 3.5t so ideal for the residential streets we work down smile

As above, fk the driving position etc. For payload, they're pretty good. And generally quite good chassis-wise... which we'll see about Wednesday. Anyway, good excuse to go the long way round over to the dark side.
haha! i can only imagine the roads up there, pretty bloody st round here now, full of potholes, police and traffic frown

Steer clear. They are absolutely woeful machines and the parts prices are shocking. Buy yourself a DAF LF or something similar.
As i say ive had canters of which parts prices are just as silly and infact i have been told even worse. I fully appreciate why they would be awful for actual haulage work, they aren't the nicest environment i can see that.

Thing is with a daf is the payload is no good for me. Legally i believe its around 2.5t,
the sides are a lot higher so i cant load with my digger, unloading stuff by hand will also be hard as well.
I know parts are cheap but my mate recently got one and he's spent a fortune sorting it out, it is 07 reg so a bit old now but its killing him. I think his was a bit tired so he's had to do a lot of stuff just tidying it up so maybe an unfair comparison.
He's got a 'bin' on the back which he loves but then he don't care about being overweight, he took it to be weighed the other day and it weighed 10t. He was quite happy with that hehe

I also know a couple of people with the isuzu, one a 7.5t the other the f110 which i believe is basically the same but bigger. Both love them. I think the f110 takes 6.3t which is pretty incredible.

If you are taking your test then you might as well get a daf 12 tonner same physical size as a 7.5 ton just bigger tyres , 8 stud wheels and stronger springs , would give you a 6 ton payload,
Your not the first person to say that.....

Only issue is my digger wont physically be able to load a daf type lorry, the sides are higher than on something like this isuzu which itself will be a bit of a stretch. I am due to get a new digger very soon and am considering the size up but then domestic driveways dont typically have much space so even the next size up slightly concerns me. I reckon a 2.7t machine would be fine but i also think thats too big for what i do.

Its never easy is it hehe

Anyway. one amp andy very very kindly went and had a look today and has confirmed the truck is indeed very tidy so i have bought it and anticipate delivery friday.
Going to be frustrating waiting for the o licence and then even longer to wait until i have taken the driving test frown

I do know a retired bloke though who is always asking if i want a driver or easy stuff doing so might get him in a few days to drive the lorry to see how we get on with it. On paper it should earn me more but time will tell smile

Got the lorry now and its a very very tidy truck. great for me and what i do, its bed is just 50mm higher than my canter 3.5t. it is 1m longer overall and only 100mm wider so perfect for the residential streets i work down.

Chassis has a fair amount of surface rust, not bad but a bit untidy. I am still trying to work out if i have it in me to go and clean it up and then apply bill hamber epoxy which i will say would make it look mint!

Also considering some ali sides and tail gate. I cant believe how heavy the sides are on this compared to my 3.5t trucks! got to be 150-250kg weight saving there. I also think that for what i do they do take a bashing better as the amount of 7.5t trucks i see which have rusty dented backs as opposed to ali which just gets a little ding and a scratch.

Thanks to andy again, really is appreciated smile

As a matter of interest how did it get to you? On the back of a transporter or was it driven down?
Bloke drove it down here on trade plates. I ran him up to basildon where he was picking up another truck to take back up north with him.
