I have a 1984 trafic high top that I have lived in when needed ( admittedly mostly away days, touring breaks etc).
I have spent a few nights in it in winter temps.
you dont need to spend 10k.
what you need are:
propex heating
passenger seat that swivels
open access to back from the cab.
holding tank for porta potti/ chemical loo ( we use a green version that uses sawdust)
sink with running water- foot pump is ok
comfy cushions to make a bed.
some form of lighting- we use oil lamps a lot of the time
good heavy curtains- that way you can park anywhere and sleep.

A coachbuilt will be less use as anything other than living in, more expensive to insure, run, tax. And its harder to park.

Can you section off the internal space at all? (ie. to give you a smaller living compartment which you can warm with your own body heat?)

This may sound crazy, but there's a guy on Box Hill who has lived in a plastic shelter for 20 years - year-round - and that's what he does.
As in box hill near Corsham?
Horsham?
As in Box Hill in Surrey.

There's a small strip of woodland which is of indeterminate ownership, only accessible from my landlord's property. He doesn't mind the guy being there, as he genuinely doesn't bother anyone. You'd never know he was there if a local hadn't told you.

Finding an arrangement like that would be difficult, I'd imagine.

ETA: in terms of practicalities, he has a 12-volt battery from which he runs LED lighting, a laptop and games console. Water is sourced from a nearby field where there's a supply for grazing horses. The owners again don't mind.

I haven't asked him about 'toilet arrangements' but I'd imagine he digs a hole. Heating is achieved via a small woodburning stove, fuelled solely by fallen twigs, plus body heat in a small space.

Ok, thanks, some usefull thoughts there, i'm not quite sure im ready to live rough yet though!

I'm going to give commuting a go for now and if the new place is ok maybe then i'll look at getting a camper.

Maybe i'll keep an eye out for nearby woods to camp in!

I'm sure this guy has been on a program on the discovery channel. He used to work in IT if its the one I'm thinking of and now wants to live completely off the grid. Has a huge collection of data on hard drives that he plans to use to restart the world after a cataclysm. Strange guy I think

This is something I've been thinking about. I'll soon be starting a new job with a two hour commute each way, so staying in a motorhome a few nights a week suddenly becomes very attractive.

I was thinking along the lines of a converted bus, coach or HGV, for the space available. I will have somewhere near work to park it.

My biggest problem in this is what to do with my dog during the day. He stays at home at the moment but I'm not so sure about leaving him in a vehicle all day.

Well, not that clever, it looked more like a wooden crate covered in tin foil!

Not so sure, just googled a Faraday cage, and tried out an experiement in the link, covered the mobile in tin foil, dialled it up, and ziltch, foil blocked incoming radiation, (test call before and after the coverup to make sure it did work, and it did)maybe a simple crate covered in tin foil works, tbh I envisaged someghing a bit more elaborate, but if it does the business, well it works.
