My old metalwork teacher had a guide for annealing, rub a bar of normal hand soap over the metal and heat until the soap goes black.

I confess I'm finding it harder than I thought to hire a mandrel bender. I can't find anything like the one in the video. The only ones I can find are labelled as conduit benders. They have a roller in the handle. The pipe/tube stays still rather than being dragged through the arc as in the video.

Any ideas whether it's the same sort of thing anyway?

I think you will struggle to hire a mandrel bender they are a bit specialist piece of kit. A conduit bender is a completely different thing and will not bend thin alum tube

Yes. I'm learning that. A friend has a home made mandrel bender in the wrong size for me but I'm going to take a look at it to see if I can make one in the size I need.

Or spend £630 on the one from that video.
