Okay, made a bad with the conrod prices by looking at google summary rather than the full page. double the price, but youre still talking a long way short of supposed cost.

Compare that to a "normal" 996/997/Boxster engine which is around £7K to replace and that is telling you quite a lot about the engineering effort in this engine.

Have to disagree there, DaGinge. As someone whose Boxster S engine disintegrated six months ago, i can testify that it costs £11000 to replace it!!

Hmmm, are you sure that that's not £7K for the motor and £4K for the dealer's labour/profit?

I blew up a boxster engine under warranty last year and was told the part cost was £7K - that probably didn't include shipping/labour/piss taking but the dealer.

Parts (NO labour) cost of my mini (A series) engine was around 12k.

And a 1 litre mini engine is next to free from an enthusiast

Any engine, or part for that matter bought in the 'aftermarket' will include a mark-up of 300-400% over the actual cost of making it.
For example, a bog standard Mondeo engine would probably sell at £4000 form a dealer, you can be sure it would cost Ford about less than a grand to make.

Makes £400 for a low milage engine for the mx5 seem like peanuts!

I've seen an ad for a Lotus 910 4 cylinder Esprit engine, last of the line but without turbo and exhaust manifold, for £4250 + vat + dead engine.
Seems quite a bargain for a Lotus 2.2 litre 4 pot racing engine that can knock up around 400 hp without too much modification.

Jon Webster of Webster Race Engineering has just fitted a small block Ford with 101mm Turbo to an MG SVR. The car is stock on the outside, but packs 1800bhp under the bonnet. Engine cost 51 grand.

You can also buy twin turbo small block Chevy engines from Gale Banks, ready made, in 800, 1200, or 1600 bhp packages, starting at 35 grand. I didn't like to ask how much the 1600bhp version was.

I remember Alan DeCadanet saying that you could go to Cosworth and buy a new, F1-spec Cosworth DFV for £10K. Then all you had to do was build a chassis and go F1 racing. At the same time, that was slightly less then the price of a new Aston martin V8.

ps. I recognise more advanced engines use more expensive materials and processes, but the difference is not that much to justify the price.

Of course, developing these engines costs nothing at all?

The original poster refers to a race engine that is being detuned for the road - my post points out that unless they are trying to recoup the development costs for the race engine rather than just the costs of making it suitable for the road then its overpriced.

You can easily spend over £20K on a very good BMC A-Series engine which is lunacy really for a design fundamentally over 50 years old.

CL500 Donkey = £17,728.88
CL55 Kompressor = £28,567.90
CL65 Bi Turbo = £57,832.13
SLR = £82,817.98 all are excluding VAT

Incidently the 65 and SLR engines are completely hand built, and I am told the 65 engine takes longer to screw together.
