I believe in God

Ask yourselves this,

Do you have a conscious? Why do you have a conscious?

Answer is, you must fear someone or something,.........being GOD.

At the moment my guess is most of you people are young to middle aged?
Later on in life when you are faced with your last few years on this planet, you will start to believe in a God and regret your wrong doings.

What a load of crap

In this at least there may be a point...funny how churches are always full of old people; is this because they were brought up to be more religious when they were younger than latter generations, or is it because the nearing of their end brings about a change in perspective or belief, if only through wishful thinking?

Why do the Big Bang theory and the existence of God have to contradict each other? Why can't the so called "Big Bang" (which wasn't actually an explosion or anything like how it sounds) be the mechanism in which a "God" functioned to give birth to creation?

Ever heard of Occam's Razor?

At the end of the day, it all boils down to faith. There is no proof to support ANY camp in this case. There is however a shedload of evidence to go both ways (and the "reasonable doubt" arguments don't apply, because theological scholars can debate with hard-core atheists equally and with no winner, using ONLY hard physical evidence and not religious mumbo-jumbo), but ultimately it is not conclusive as to whether there is a God or not.

So what is the shitload of evidence of a god? I honestly would like to see it...

I have another opinion.

Having just watched a ten year old lose a very brave fight against leukaemia this morning. The sort of fight that would have put any strong man to shame. Her last words to her mother were an appology. Its rare these days for a patient to manage to bring a tear to my hard old eyes.

It occurs to me that even if there is a god, he's not worthy of much more in the way of discussion.

Funny that, isn't it? Whever this debate comes up, someone always claims there's loads of evidence to support the IMB* Hypothesis, but when anyone asks to see some of it, it all goes quiet...

Sorry to hear about such loss - And it brings up the argument that how can there be a God if He allows such suffering to happen?
This theodicy is central to many discussions on God. Often the weak arguement of we cannot know His divine plan is used as a defence. Myself I prefer to argue against the accepted notion that God is Good. Even scripture merely states that God IS, not any notion on His goodness. Good and evil are man-made conceits based on our experiences and as such are judgements we make.

With regards to how our advanced society has evolved in terms of social/technical progress I can only see the concept of God/supreme authority kept used by mentally weak people who can't bear responsibilities in their lives and refuse to take life as the bag of sh*te it can sometimes be.
Just my €0.02 as the usefulness of that concept nowadays.

I rang a good mate of mine I work with this morning and he says "Guess what ? THERE IS A GOD!!!"

Now Mike is a pragmatic agnostic to the best of my knowledge and is hard pressed to come to such a sure conclusion so I ask him "and your proof is ....???"

"They just sacked our boss!! "

Irish jig and a merry party today followed....thanks God

What if God invented science? What if God works through the laws and principles we are only now discovering to govern the world? What if scienctific discoveries don't nullify the existence of a God, but actually complement it?

What if, quite simply, the way our universe works and the scientific principles we use to try and disprove him are actually the plans in the great architectural drawings of this universe?

Once again, there no proof to support either camp. You choose your beliefs and you go with them, because you have faith in your choice.

I think we could really do with some clarification of the word 'faith' and the notion of 'science' here. Theres been much talk of people either having faith in religion or faith in science, as though science is some commodity that you can get off the shelves, a sort of alternative religion. Total nonsense.

Science is purely the extended version of the logical thinking that every one of us uses every day. You want a pint of milk? You go to the shop to get one. Yes, its possible the shop might have been nuked overnight, but we all know that observed evidence suggests it will almost certainly provide you with milk. It follows quite simply that to retrieve the milk on a morning yet deny results produced from only slightly more complex logical thinking (e.g. evolution) is the action of an irrational mind.

Personally I wouldn't suggest either the existence or non-existence of a higher intelligence because we're a long way from proving it either way. But to set aside what has been discovered from straightforward logic just because it contradicts some word of mouth teaching from thousands of years ago does seem a little daft.

This thread is just another example of religion being the root of a great deal of disagreement and on a larger scale a source of some of the worlds greatest problems.
