Sorry, but reading some of these posts I must be in the wrong forum. I thought PH was all about the cars, the power, the speed, the aspirations, the achivement and the enjoyment. Obviously this got lost somewhere...
Or is it, the posters on here have issues with some people owning certain cars and doing certain things?
I enjoy driving and I sometimes take certain "risks" but only with me and my car, I will drive my favourite roads very 'early doors' when other members of the public are not on the roads and if in my selfishness I wipe myself out then that is my choice. I also smoke and drink, my body, my life, my money... we make our choices...
I am really fed up with this nanny state attitude that seems to permeate everything these days, go off and get a life, if you disagree with the gumball/furball/cannonball then don't read about it, don't have an opinion on it, think of your blood pressure...it just might kill ya!
Some rather controversial comments there Jamie, so it's OK for you go out and take risks on public roads early in the morning, but what if you also happen to "take out" another person who also happens to be driving the roads early morning? Not so good eh? If you took out any of my kids or wife I'd be pretty angry with that. Perhaps it would be better to exercise your "baby" on track days? Regards being on the wrong forum, I beginning to wonder if it's us old-timers that are on the wrong forum? Having been on P'Heads since it's inception I can assure you there are plenty of people on here who have far more exotic cars than a BMW (if that was your point, if not I apologise) as well as there being several active racing drivers, police drivers etc. so we certainly get to use our cars in anger but don't advocate driving like an idiot, pride in your car should also mean pride in your driving. Because some of us do have an opinion that differs from yours doesn't make it any the less valid so why should we shut-up and not comment? You're entitled to your opinion I'm entitled to mine, personally I consider stickering up one's car and playing "pretend" race drivers whilst hooning around on the continent to be pretty facile and likely to get all sports car drivers a bad name abroad. That's all we're saying, sorry it annoys you. Rich...![](http://www.pistonheads.com/include/images/rolleyes.gif)

Stig, Rich, Flemke. My deep apologies, I was in a lousy mood when I typed those comments last night and was offside in my attitude.
Just so you don't think I am a complete tool, when I go out early morning (usually Sunday's), I travel the country lanes, keeping to the speed limits - some are national, others 40mph, but using the car as I see it, to the best of my abilities.
I don't think your opinions are any less valid, guess I just jumped when I should have walked - if you get my drift.
Yes I am aware that my Z4 is not the most exotic machine on here by a longshot, but the car is a compromise as I share it with wifey at the moment and a TVR etc. was not on the list as far as she was concerned...

Please gentleman, be aware that I am truly humbled. I have taken on your points and find myself in agreement and shall now go and hide in my box

No worries chap, everyone's entitled to their opinions, it's the lifeblood of these forums

If it's any help, I quite like Z4s

Just thought id add my two pence to this.
Having worked on the last two Gumball 3000s i can safely say that there are probably 10% of the drivers who drive way over their skill levels and put others at risk and use the 'gumball lane' unfortunately these are the guys that make the press/tv/news. the other 90% are out on the Gumball for their own various personal reasons. these are the entrants you never hear of and infact the organisers wont even know who they are either.
im not justifying anything and certainly dont want the antics of a few idiots to ruin driving for everyone in the future, but i wanted to add that they aren't all bad!

One wonders whether the various Dumb-ball organisers couldn't pre-screen prospective participants in order to weed out the scum. How about if each applicant were to undergo a brain scan, to eliminate the 10% who don't have one?

Good point. But they need the dangerous scum to help sell their DVDs and TV programmes to the networks and of course maintain future advertising revenue.

Hey, are you suggesting that there is a profit motive in this? How cynical of you. These are genuine lovers of good motoring who do this only to burnish their driving skills, revel in each other's brilliant company, and elevate the human condition.

Apologies for stating the obvious. Too much Rioja rehydration juice made me miss the subtlety of your inital post.
Now then just to clarify:

I keep getting the 10 and the 90 mixed up.
Oh, wait - now I remember.
10 was the participants' average mental age, and 90 was their collective IQ.

Mind you this is good: they dont know who they are. So, no liklehood of illegal money laundering then. Or of giving false ID "just in case" I get stopped through customs, police etc"
I wonder if the organisers insurance compnay knows about this? I can't believ they would isnure the event if the organisers dont know who is participating...
Hello all,
I did the CB run europe this year. For me it was about the personal challenge of building a supercar in my garage, to a fixed timescale that I couldn't move. Then to take the machine on the shakedown on a lifetime to see just how well I put it together. I got round, missed the section from Rimini to Rome due to starter motor issues - but fixed it, joined back in and thoroughly enjoyed it.
This years run seemed to be much smaller that previous years, more couples to, with only 30 odd cars. During the whole week I witnessed two pieces of fast road driving. The 360 and the RUF. Both overtook me 1/2 hour out from Calais. They got caught, in my mind the Gendarms did a good job, perhaps the sticker adhesive got to their heads?
I can honestly say that the rest of the guys and gals drove quickly but sensibly. I for one did the first stage in an average of 62.427mph with 6 fuel stops over 900 miles (don't, I know). On that stretch I got to 160kph but mainly tootled along at 140-150Kph.
Most people who did it were either doing it for charity (not entirely sure on the ethics of spending £4500 and only then collecting for charity - but that's just me) and/or for publicity of their own/sponsors businesses (a couple of real nice guys launching a new Vodka product spring to mind). I guess for them, people who buy the DVD might be target market???
Oh, by the way, a fellow Ultima owner is on the Cannonball at the moment and has just posted on our forum about his 'run in with the rozzers'. Perhaps we should prepare some sort of rosette for him?
Then again, maybe they just stopped him to congratulate him on his exemplary driving.
Somehow, I doubt it.
Stig, I did get a rosette - the Spirit of the Cannonball!!! (wooden spoon in disguise!) and as for the Rozzeria - here is a little pic of one of my two run ins - they took us for a drink in the bar afterwards!!
Tell you what though chaps - I thought just the same as a lot of the guys on here about the Cannonball Crazies, but having been there, done that, I'm converted.
Try it, you might like it!

The 'Spirit of the Cannonball'? Spirit of the Gumball? Christ, can't these events come up with some originality or do they just have to rip one another off? Does the Cannonbal have an egotistical, aviator wearing jude law wannabe tosser spearheading it too?

Are you the blonde in the pic above? You're not the same blonde on the Gumball (US, 2003?) Movie in the Murci that returned home are you?
Edit: No, you're not. Cos you're a guy. Named Peter. Sorry

Sorry to use you as an example Pete (unfairly), but I stand by my opinion of these events I'm afraid.
As for converting me - no chance! I'd rather spend the money on racing or trackdays.

IINM, the character who's asserting his alleged motives for "creating" Gumball is that same kid who went on tv after his first event and boasted that his objective was to make as much money for himself as quickly as he could.
So much "fun, creativity and style" - the kid's a real artist, ain't he?.
I don't think we should allow ourselves to get overly annoyed by these people - life is too short to waste it on pre-pubescent twits.
