Value of stolen/recovered car
Discussion
My car was nicked last week - see www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=167031
If by some miracle it's not either burnt out in a field somewhere or on a container ship to Amsterdam, would having been nicked affect its resale value? Would it show up on an HPI check? Would, indeed, you as a buyer expect the seller to tell you that some scrote had had his way with the car for a few days?

Yeah, my feelings are pretty much that I don't want it back (and after 5 days that's looking pretty unlikely).
I was just curious - and still am, I guess - presumably if you run an HPI check on the car right now it'll come back as 'hot as hell' so does this get completely wiped if the car is recovered, or does it still show up as having been stolen at some point in the past? What Mike said makes sense if the police get it and don't have the keys but that wouldn't be the case here.
Personally I'd want to know and would definitely expect a bit off normal price, for some indefinable reason I can't quite put my finger on.

Dragging this one up from the deeps...
The car was recovered with minor damage a week after being stolen - it needed a new alloy and the rear bumper was scratched. I then part-exed it into a Volvo main dealer who couldn't give two stuffs that it had been nicked as long as it hadn't been declared a total loss - so now you know!

scared but happy said:
Err. Strange thing to ask. But... Have you done an HPI check on your own car? (well its hardly a £50 ford is it).
Was that aimed at me? If so then - as I was selling to a dealer then no I didn't. If I'd sold the Lexus privately then yes I would have done, just so I could show it to any buyers and be up-front about it. Have to confess I'm still curious as to what it would say!
